Crop Rotation

This is considered to be one of the best system of farming in agriculture because it gives or add more fertility to the soil as the farmer decides to rotate the planting each year or within a year for the purpose of making good use of the piece of land and to achieve good yields.

Crop rotation is widely known to be a sequential cropping system whereby a farmer thinks it wise to cultivate some piece of land and then rotate the planting system in same piece of land.

This proces or system of farming would needs a close attention of the farmer such that the farmer will time accurately on when to plant, when to harvest and when to carry on with the next planting after the preceeding crop has been harvested.

Here, in the northern part of Nigeria, groundnuts are being planted from May to August which is the harvest season and after the harvest of groundnuts at that season, the farmer can proceed by planting beans. Now, beans or soya beans is the best crop to plant after the harvest of groundnuts because groundnuts by nature has alot of leaves and the falling and decaying of those leaves serve as rich manure for the beans that would be planted by September to be harvested by November and with this, crop rotation is achieved.

Importance of crop rotation

• The use of artificial fertilisers becomes less
• Improvement of soil fertility for the farmer
• It is very profitable (High productivity)
• It makes the farmer understands his farming more when a particular crop is been planted at a particular time before the preceding of the next.
• It helps the farner to harvest more than one crop in a year.

Crop rotation as well has it's disadvantages but ofcourse less. One of it is the farmer needs to give a proper attention to the crops. The farmer can be at a high lose especially if the crop goes bad
