The wet season was over and the dry season came, then it happened.

The farm was quiet like how it is Tuesday mornings. The chickens did not go beyond their yard. The dogs also kept to the barn as trained by their owner. The Sheep remained inside the field.

That adventurous young ewe was quick to grow into adulthood. She had powerful legs that could make her sprint faster than her mates. Her wool was just too beautiful. Her eyes were rare looking. She ate decently and conducted herself appropriately making her parents proud.

She remained near the rest of the herd. Her father was the ancient ram who was seen as over vigilant.

There was a rat, lifeless and lying at the fence post near the barn on this quiet Tuesday morning. No one could have dropped it and it's not like the rat was poisoned. Someone put it there and it was placed deliberately.

There was a second one in the following morning. And then there was yet another on Thursday.

Every rat lay in the exact same spot. Every rat was treated in exactly the same manner, looking twisted, blood from the butt, cold and lifeless.

The old ram removed every rat before his young innocent daughter saw them.
Something troubled him apart from that. He noticed a smell. It was coming from the adjacent farm and the smell was a familiar one. It was also a very strong scent. Old ram was very confused.

The smell was always accompanied by the dead rats. Every night he sat by the fence, he did not move nor did he make noise. He listened to the sounds of silence and watched the space between their two farms, looking out as vigilant as always for any danger.

On the fourth night which was a Friday night, something suddenly approached. It moved slowly and steadily and it seemed as though the creature had done this a million times before, so much experience with its movement.

Low and behold, it was the bull from the next farm. He was massive and terrifying.
He had this grey hair all over his face. He was quite old and knew it well. The old ones are the most dangerous because they move with experience.

He shoved another dead rat through the opening of the fence using his nose. He stood there for a moment before lifting his head up. He stared at the old ram right into his eyes.
The old ram gave out a cry, a powerful and loud cry that the entire village heard.

By morning, all of the sheep flocked together along the fence, the owner relocated them temporarily until after they had dealt with the bull. The old ram had protected his daughter with the same vigilance he's honored with.

The End
