Oh, you dealt with that problem too. I found it annyoing and it's a total waste of money. I can imagine how agitated and furious some children and people get if they have to do this. What I also hated was the low-budget brush and the cardboard canvas not being straight. I believe I posted it with @wakeupkitty.pal before I threw it away.
I tried that too but it was a disaster. What type of paint you use?
Perhaps you should make some basic sketch without details and just fill it out without a certain time and see how that goes.

Mine was something else. If you ask me some cheap waterbasis paint. I kept seeing the numbers even after several layers.
