Deciphering "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility"

With power, the age old-wisdom most readily attributed to- though recently modernised by the 'Spider-Man' series over thousands of years of discourse, philosophical thinking and political debate, has to do with this: Whenever an individual, an organisation or a leadership position gains the power or authority to affect actions, attitudes or their surroundings, the power carries with it a socio-moral duty as well as the capability to affect these: that is because power gives freedom, agency and such agency in turn carries with it moral culpability. Responsibility is simply power's conscience.

Power is meant to have an effect: its essence lies in capacity to get things done, manage systems and advance worthy projects or purposes. When individuals or organisations wield influence that cannot meet this fundamental criterion, when capacity exists for more management, however, it quickly proves to be a futile, even pernicious thing. Power devoid of the responsibility and duty associated with wielding it cannot drive progress.

Its potency dissipates as its capacity degenerates toward waste, and a lack of accountable management can only breed disarray.

A loss of proper authority is a loss in its more important, operative-and moral-respects.

Core Principles Governing a Balance between Authority and Accountability

The balance of authority with accountability entails at once personal convictions and institutional defences:- 1 A system in which a considerable, visible system for oversight exists, ensuring open-handed and obvious administration can prevent the undue usage or enjoyment of official command. – 2 The exercise of power and the wielding of influence will be informed by an enduring moral principle which gives ultimate preference to long-term social welfare above private comfort and fleeting desire.

Systems are to be devised such that no office or individual may acquire and retain that advantage without accountability to measurable results to those subject to their control; in every instance, an obligation may rest behind advantage. – 4 Humble, self-aware persons in places of influence must develop a personal appreciation of the limitations of their power, solicit diverse views and avoid self–aggrandisement. – 5 There should, clearly, be effective consequence for failing to bear responsibilities.
