The Moss-rose
The Moss-rose is not a true rose, it's not even a member of the rose family. But who said beauty was exclusive to members of the rose family? The Moss-rose is stunningly beautiful. Depending where you are reading from, you may know this flower as Mexican rose, the Eleven o'clock flower, Sun rose, Rose Jepun, Table rose, Rock rose, or Moss-rose purslane.
Identified universally as Portulaca grandiflora, the Moss-rose is a flowering plant with the ability to thrives in poor water conditions. Its secreat is in its thick-juicy leaves and stems that store water, helping it survive in hot, dry places where other plants would normally die.
Let's say it employs the Aloe vera tactic, which involves converting its leaves into massive gelatinous water tanks that make them look succulent.
Having a reservoir of water like this means they don't need so much attention even in the dry season or harmattan period when everywhere is dry. The Moss-rose also have this whitish powder that makes the plant hydrophobic, it also protects it against sunburns and insects, a perfect choice for people who are not always available to water their flowers. Absurdly, they don't even like too much water.
The Moss-rose flowers have five petals, with colours ranging from vibrant red, orange, pink, white, and yellow.

The Moss-rose is an ornamental plant, so I can't really see what else it could be used for, it's too bitter to eat but could easily get confused for Portulaca oleracea, the one we locally call 'Mmon-mmon ikong ekpo.' You can see the resemblance in the sample of Portulaca oleracea shown below

Both waterleaf and the weed-looking Portulaca oleracea are edible, they don't have beautiful flowers but somehow resemble Moss-rose, who is the hero of today's post.
As usual, I tried to see if by any chance the Moss-rose plant could have any medicinal value. I found nothing for now, it's just a beautiful flower and nothing more.
The presence of different coloured flowers in this flower garden suggests that different seeds were planted together.
If you have wondered why it is sometimes called the eleven o'clock flower, this is the Moss-rose captured around nine o'clock in the morning.

The flower's petals fold up in the evening and remain closed till the morning on the next day, waiting for the sun and will open up fully around eleven o'clock when the sun is very bright.
Conclusion
Not every plant was meant to serve as food or a drug, some are just there to look good and maybe Moss-rose has nothing else to offer besides its beauty or its other functions will be discovered in the future.
