SLC-S31W5-"My Taste, My Culture (Home & Heritage) | Aloo Bharta
Greetings from Mohammad Sumon!
How are you all friends? Hope you all are well. I am doing very well with all your prayers and the infinite mercy of the great Allah.
SLC31-W5: My Taste My Culture (Home & Heritage)
Today, as part of the 'Steemit Engagement Challenge', I have prepared my post on one of our very favorite and traditional dishes, 'Aloo Bharta'. Aloo Bharta is a name of satisfaction on the Bengali dining table. Many thanks to @alexanderpeace for organizing this contest. So, let's get started.
I think that for Bengalis, Aloo Bharta is not just a dish; it is a piece of home, the touch of a mother's hand and a kind of satisfaction. A pinch of salt, a drop of pure mustard oil and a boiled potato - the combination of these three is the real nobility of the Bengali dining table. Due to the low cost and simple recipe, I almost made and ate Aloo Bharta regularly in my bachelor's life. Aloo Bharta is a favorite dish of all classes of people.
Aloo Bharta (Mashed Potatoes)
Task 1: Preparation (Ingredients and preparation process) |
|---|
Although Aloo Bharta looks simple, the real secret of its taste lies in the right ingredients and kneading technique. In a very short time, I made Potato Bharta, and I have mentioned a list of the ingredients that I used below.
Necessary Ingredients:
| Ingredients | Amount |
|---|---|
| Potato | 3 Pieces (200gm) |
| Dried chili | 5 Pieces |
| Onion | 1 Piece |
| Pure mustard oil | 10 gm (Approx.) |
| Salt | As per taste |
Preparation process:
Step 1

|---|
First, I washed the potatoes well, cut them and boiled them; it took about 15 minutes to boil. After boiling, I peeled the potatoes and kept them in a bowl.
Step 2
Then I fried the chopped onion and dried chilli in another pan. However, many people make it with raw onion and raw chilli.

Step 3
Now I ground the fried dried chilli with salt in a bowl. Now I mixed the chopped onion and boiled potatoes with this spice mixture very well with my hands.

Step 4
Finally, I heated a sufficient amount of mustard oil in a pan. And I will fry the Potato Bharta in the hot oil. The pungent aroma of the mustard oil is the main attraction of this bharta. I fried it for about two minutes, and the mouth-watering aloo bharta was ready!

Task 2: Family Story & Cultural Transmission |
|---|
I originally learned this recipe from my mother. Whenever it rained heavily during my childhood, or there was not much time to organize at home, at my request, my mother would cook this Potato Bharta and some dal with hot rice. The taste of the bharta, made with the utmost compassion of my mother's hands, is still lingering in my mouth. In our family, Potato Bharta is not just a food, it is an emotion. Especially on winter mornings, it is paired with panta bharta or hot rice. It has become a part of our family identity because it teaches us to find extraordinary satisfaction in the simple things of life. Mother used to say, "The simplest food sometimes gives the most peace." This recipe has been passed down in our family from generation to generation because of its easy availability and authentic taste. Whenever I go to the village, my mother never misses out on trying her homemade Potato Bharta.

Task 3: Cultural Connection |
|---|
I think aloo bharta is a simple reflection of our family lifestyle. It is a symbol of our unity and hospitality. When all the siblings would sit down to eat together, our joy would know no bounds with a bowl of aloo bharta. For me, aloo bharta reminds me of those golden days of my childhood, even amidst the busyness of my present life. Today, when I was cooking for myself, every time I make aloo bharta, I feel my roots. It acts as a strong bridge between my past and present, reminding me where I come from.

However, culture is not just about big festivals, but these small habits that are mixed into our daily food plate give us our true identity. In my opinion, having a lump of Potato Bharta on one side of a Bengali's feet means heavenly satisfaction. It is not just a food, but the name of Bengalis' passion, nostalgia and ultimate refuge. I have tried to present my simple yet traditional Potato Bharta beautifully to everyone today.
I am inviting three of my friends on this platform to participate in this contest - @ikwal @nicely40, and @saxopedia. I look forward to your participation.

Reading your post really reminded me of home cooked meals. Aloo Bharta is as simple as it is close to the heart. Especially the taste of mother's hands was very good because such food includes not only taste but also love. You shared your memories and culture in a very beautiful way. 😊

Walaikum-assalam, @elsa-queen! Thank you so much for such a touching comment. You are completely right—nothing can ever beat the taste of food made by a mother’s hands, because love is the secret ingredient. Aloo Bharta is simple, but it carries so many comforting family memories for all of us. I'm truly glad my post could bring back those sweet feelings for you. Wishing you a wonderful and blessed week ahead. 🙂
