How Emotional Intelligence Helps Children Succeed in School

It is one of the most vital skills that any child should possess; emotional intelligence. It’s about knowing what we feel, managing our emotions and comprehending others' emotions. A child with emotional intelligence is able to remain calm, to work out problems peaceably, and to be kind and respectful to others. EI is not the smartest in the class. It's a matter of learning to harness our emotions in a healthy way. I feel that once children learn emotional intelligence from an early age, they will have a greater chance of success in school and in life.

One of the major benefits of emotional intelligence for children is in enhanced learning. A child who is able to manage anger, fear and/or frustration will be able to concentrate better in lessons. Learning at school can be challenging and children may feel like they want to quit. But a child with emotional intelligence realizes that challenges are a part of learning. The child does not get upset and keeps trying. When I am patient while trying to learn something new, I comprehend it better. This indicates that if emotions are controlled, children can have improved academic outcomes.

Emotional intelligence also facilitates children to develop good relationships with their peers. Children get to meet people from various families and backgrounds in school. We all have our own views, personalities and behaviors. Sometimes misunderstandings happen. A child who has emotional intelligence understands how to listen carefully, speak politely and solve problems without fighting. These children are more easily making friends as they are caring and respectful. School is more enjoyable and is a happy learning environment if good friendships are present, as everyone feels accepted.

One of the other major advantages is that emotional intelligence enhances communication. Kids who are aware of their feelings are able to articulate their thoughts. When they feel upset they can tell us with words instead of shouting or crying. It is easier for teachers and classmates to understand them, which is conducive to solving problems. Communication is also an important aspect of group work, class discussions, and school projects. Children get the opportunity to interact and share ideas, to listen to others, and to collaborate effectively.

Emotional intelligence is also beneficial to children in making them respect their teachers. Teachers strive to teach and grow students to be responsible persons. If children regulate their emotions, they are more likely to comply with classroom rules and instructions. They understand that discipline is important for learning. They do not argue or get angry when they are corrected, but take the suggestions and make an effort to be better. This results in a calm classroom environment with the teacher and students learning together.

Emotional intelligence is another advantage of confidence. But many children doubt themselves from time to time, particularly when they are not successful in a test or make mistakes. Emotionally intelligent child knows that failure is not a final sentence. Rather, failure is a chance to learn and grow. I think that everyone makes mistakes because no one is perfect. If children have someone to explain to them that they did not succeed the first time, but they will now, they build confidence and start trying again.

Emotional intelligence is also one of the factors that enable children to cope with stress. Children may feel anxious when they have exams, homework, assignments and competitions during the school day. When they are unable to cope with these feelings, they might find it hard to focus or be unable to do their job well. But emotionally intelligent kids are aware of how to soothe themselves. May take deep breaths, think positively, ask for help, or organise their time well. These basic measures help them to be better behaved in school and to feel less stressed.

Decision-making is another significant aspect of emotional intelligence that is crucial. In school, kids choose various things every day. They have the choice of paying attention to class, doing their homework, or playing rather than studying. In general, emotionally intelligent children think before they act. They know that right choices will yield good outcomes. They also do not engage in negative behaviors, like bullying, cheating, lying or hanging out with bad friends. This will enable them to develop a positive image and act as positive role models to others.

Emotional intelligence also imparts kindness and compassion to the children. They develop an appreciation for others' feelings and are keen to support others when they feel sad or have difficulties. When a child comforts a crying classmate and shares learning materials with others, he or she is demonstrating emotional intelligence. Such acts of kindness foster a friendly school climate in which all feel safe and respected. Children caring for one another creates a better school.

Parents and teachers are a very important factor in raising children's emotional intelligence. They should help children identify various feelings, defuse conflicts peacefully, say sorry when they go wrong, and forgive others. Adults should also model good behavior: "Children learn from adults around them. If parents and teachers are calm, speak kindly and with respect, children will follow suit.

Finally, emotional intelligence is a highly useful skill which can have numerous benefits for children in school. It helps children learn more, increases confidence, fosters friendship, enhances communication, promotes respect, decreases stress, and makes good choices. It also helps in the teaching of kindness, patience and understanding. I think that all children should be taught emotional intelligence skills, which help them to be successful in school, and to be successful in life. Children whose emotional and interpersonal skills are developed will become caring, confident and successful adults.
