We are born into a world where seasons affects our lives. Seasons play important roles in human affairs. There comes a time when we feel so much heat. Another time comes when we feel so much cold. These two patterns are products of the weather.

In this part of the world located at the eastern part of Nigeria, we normally have two common seasons that affects us here namely:

  • The dry season
  • The rainy season

The Dry Season
The dry season comes with intense sunshine and intermittent wind that try to cool the heat. During dry season, people sweat a lot because of the intense sunshine. Due to this severe dryness, plants and grasses normally dries off and dust particles will fill the air. This forces people to put on nose masks so as to block dust particles from getting into their nostrils.

Some people like the dry season while others are not comfortable with that weather condition. We starts noticing the dry season from late November and in some cases beginning December. It then lasts to March and the rainy season begins to set in April.

The Rainy season

The rainy season is another weather condition that affects our daily activities even our health. Currently we are at the peak of the rainy season here in the south eastern part of Nigeria. When it starts to rain, people shut their doors, windows, and businesses would be affected. People would put on their rain coats, rain booths sweaters or other cold protective wears to shield themselves from the severe cold weather.

Personally I'm also affected by this rainy season. Sometimes it starts raining early in the morning stops late in the afternoon. By this time, is already late to go to work. Other days it will start in the afternoon during working hours and continue raining after the close of work. It is difficult to come back home with the rain. I had to get myself a waterproof so as to not get immersed in the rain.

For several weeks now, it has been raining consistently. People would go to their work places, shops and market with the rain. School children are not left out. Parents dresses their children with sweaters for school to protect them from cold. They will bathe hot water and to a level drink warm water so that they can withstand the cold weather.

The rainy season poses some health challenges to both adults and children. Some of the health challenges that comes with the rainy season include:

  • Common cold
  • Malaria
  • Pneumonia
  • Cholera
  • Skin infection
During this rainy season, health experts often recommend that we do the following to avoid these illnesses:
  • Washing of hands regularly
  • Keep our surroundings clean
  • Drink safe, boiled or clean water
  • Sleep under a mosquito treated nets

Since the rainy season is associated with cold, is very necessary to protect our kids from this weather. The children should not be allowed to go out even to school when there is a heavy rainfall. Parents on the other side, should put on their rain coats and boots or sweaters if they must go into the rain.

We should take adequate measures to protect our families from this cold weather at home, school, shops, or working places. Don't live in this weather carelessly to avoid these illnesses which could result to incurring high medical expenses.

What is the weather condition in your area, is it rainy? If yes, how have you been coping with it? How do you protect yourself or your family from this cold weather brought about by the rainy season?
