What I Learned in Church Yesterday-Jesus: The Pillar of the Church || 07/06/2026 ||
"For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ." — 1 Corinthians 3:11 (NIV)
There are Sundays you walk into church carrying the weight of the week — the deadlines, the disappointments, the quiet anxieties that follow you even into the pew. And then there are Sundays where the message doesn't just speak to you. It speaks through you. Today was one of those Sundays.
The topic was simple, yet profound: Jesus as the Pillar of the Church.
Our pastor opened with an architectural illustration. He asked us to imagine the most magnificent cathedral we'd ever seen — vaulted ceilings, stained glass, stone columns rising from floor to roof. Beautiful. Impressive. But strip away the central pillar? The entire structure collapses.
That, he said, is exactly what the Church looks like without Jesus.
What Does It Mean for Jesus to Be the Pillar?
A pillar doesn't just decorate a building — it sustains it. It bears the load so everything else can stand. In the same way, Jesus is not merely a symbol at the centre of Christianity. He is the load-bearing structure of the entire faith.
The Apostle Paul captures this beautifully in 1 Timothy 3:15:
"…the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth."
The Church exists to uphold truth — and that truth is anchored entirely in the person of Jesus Christ. His life. His death. His resurrection. His return.
Our pastor reminded us that many institutions today are crumbling — families, governments, even some congregations — because they have slowly removed Jesus from the centre. When the pillar is removed, the structure does not stand.
Three Things a Pillar Does — And How Jesus Fulfils Them
- A Pillar Provides Stability
In a world of shifting values and cultural noise, Jesus is unchanging. "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." —Hebrews 13:8.

The church that is anchored in Him does not drift with every new wind of doctrine.
- A Pillar Provides Strength
The church does not draw strength from its programs, its building, or its reputation. It draws strength from its relationship with Jesus. It is through Him that we do the impossible — love enemies, forgive the unforgivable, serve without recognition.
- A Pillar Provides Direction
Pillars are visible. They orient everyone inside the building. Jesus — through His Word and His Spirit — constantly orients the Church back to its purpose: love God, love people, make disciples.
✍️ My Personal Reflection
What struck me most today was the quiet reminder that we can get so busy doing church that we forget to know Christ. We can run committees, organise events, sing the right songs, and yet slowly drift from the Pillar Himself.
Today's message was a course correction for my soul.
I left the service with a renewed commitment — not to be more religious, but to be more rooted. To return, daily, to the One who holds everything together. Because when Jesus is truly the pillar of your personal life — not just your church attendance — you discover a stability no circumstance can shake.
🕯️ Closing Scripture
"And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it." — Matthew 16:18 (NIV)

The Church was not built on a programme or a personality. It was built on the revelation of who Jesus is — and that foundation remains unshaken.
