SC-S31/W6-Movie Magic |Movies that stay with you(Merlin)
It is a beautifully true statement about how a good story can live within you forever. One thing is for sure, once a film or TV show truly impacts a person, the act of watching is no longer just watching, it is truly living through something, and it may manifest in anything from conversations you have, to dreams you have, however if I may name one outstanding story that has well and truly buried itself deep within myself and never really left; it has to be the fantasy drama marvel, Merlin.
The story is told through many series, but viewing it as one epic arc shows the incredible feeling it left on me. Merlin retells the classic Arthurian tale but through the perspective of a young warlock who has to keep his magical abilities a secret where they are forbidden (death punishment). He is secretly tasked with protecting the arrogance, albeit noble, Prince Arthur.
The Scene that Lives with me.
There is only one image burned into my mind and it's Arthur's dying moments on the shores of Avalon. After all these years Merlin must hide from Arthur he is forced to show himself when Arthur dies from the wound he received from Mordred. It broke my heart. You can see the confusion and betrayal on his face it turns to love and relief.
As Merlin tries desperately to save his friend, Arthur has only a few more breaths in him but, "Thank you" he breathes. This moment just loops around in my head as the moment all their secrets finally disappear between them and they see each other for the people that they truly are. The moment of Merlin holding his king as he died on the lone, misty lakeside perfectly represents beauty and tragedy.
The Message Carried Forward
The message I took away with me from this story is the power of selfless dedication and platonic love. Merlin's entire existence was tied into a huge destiny he kept from his only real friend, he never wanted glory, wealth or fame, just for his friend to be safe and successful.
This has taught me that the most rewarding sacrifice people make in their lives are often ones nobody ever really gets to know about and that true friendship is about something a lot deeper than bragging rights when times are good, it is about standing by someone's side no matter how dark it gets, and carrying burdens for them, alone.
The Reason why I'd Recommend It
I do recommend this masterpiece to any story lover out there who loves stories about deep relationships, with intense plot and brilliant character development. Beyond the magic spells and fight scenes, this is an absolutely outstanding story about the true meanings of friendship and fate, balanced well between being extremely funny and devastatingly sad.
When you get to the end of the story it feels as if you have really been raised along with all these characters and you are left with a lot of good feelings about the lives of the characters.
Merlin isn't just a short story to be forgotten but an epic which alters the way that you see the ideas of friendship, duty and loyalty.
