Simple First Aid Techniques
What is first aid, and why is it important?
First aid, is the first treatment that is given to a person who is suffering from an injury before the arrival of a doctor.
This definition is an elementary definition which at my level I would say that first aid is the immediate treatment or assistance that is given to a person who is suffering from an injury or sudden illness until professional medical help arrives.
First aid is all about saving someone and making the person feel relieved while waiting for a medical professional to arrive.
First aid is important for the following reasons:
- First aid can save someone's life in an emergency.
- First aid, can minimise the severity of injuries.
- First aid helps to prevent someone from getting an infection.
- First aid provides someone who is suffering from injury or illness comfort.
Which simple first aid techniques do you know or have learned? When should they be used?
The simple first aid techniques that I do know are:
- Treating scrapes and minor cuts
- Applying bandages and pressure to stop someone from bleeding
- Managing burns
- Assisting someone who is choking
- Performing CPR
When they should be used:
- Minor scrapes and cuts, are to be used for small wounds and the prevention of infection.
- Bleeding control, that is when there is bleeding from wounds or cuts
- CPR, is to be used when someone is not breathing or unresponsive.
- Managing burns is to be used for minor scalds or thermal burns.
What are the step-by-step procedures for applying the first aid techniques you have mentioned above? State them.
step-by-step procedures for applying the first aid techniques I have mentioned above
Treating scrapes and minor cuts:
- Is to wash hands thoroughly
- Clean the windows with clean water to remove dirt.
- Is to apply an antiseptic if you have.
- Cover the wounds with a bandage.
- Change the dressing daily.
Applying bandages and pressure to stop someone from bleeding
- Wear hand gloves if you have
- Make use of a clean cloth firmly on the wound.
- Maintain pressure until bleeding stops.
- If blood soaks through, add some cloth/dressing without removing
- Elevate the injured limb if possible you can.
Performing CPR
- Check the responsiveness of the person
- Call for emergency services
- Make sure that the person is lying on their back on a firm surface.
- Place your hands on the person's chest.
- Perform 30 compression
Assisting someone who is choking
- Encourage the person to cough if he or she can
- If the person cannot breathe or cough effectively, call for emergency services.
- Stand behind, support the person's chest, and give firm blows between the shoulder blades.
- If successfully done, then perform abdominal thrusts.
Have you ever used first aid to help yourself or someone else? Share your experience.
Yes, I have ever used first aid to help myself and even someone else. There was a day I went to the farm to assist my mother which at the process of me weeding grass, when I then injured myself on my leg and I started bleeding. I quickly stopped work and used clean water to wash the wound before I used a clean handkerchief to tie the wound which stopped it from bleeding.
Why do you think everyone should learn basic first aid skills?
I think everyone should learn basic first aid skills for the following reasons;
- For life-saving capability; quick action can prevent death or serious injury.
- For increased confidence; knowing what to do can reduce panic in an emergency.
- For helping others; first aid promotes community safety and support.
- For prevention of complications; proper
- first aid can prevent infections
