One childhood discipline method I still agree with is flogging children when they are wrong. Growing up in Nigeria, it is a common way parents correct their children especially stubborn ones that refuse to listen and obey instructions but nowadays many parents are doing gentle parenting forgetting that it only works for gentle kids. This act of gentle parenting has often times bred spoilt children and once they are in public you'll see them display their naughty characters out.

Even the Bible says in Prov.13.24 " He who spares his rod [of discipline] hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines diligently and punishes him early. (AMP) ".

I can remember vividly how I was flogged by my dad for wasting water at home knowing fully well that there was no means to get water anywhere. At that point I felt I did not do anything wrong but growing up I realised that I was wrong.

Although I believe that when you flog children you should do it with love, patience, and self control. Do not go ahead to use all your energy to flog them leaving marks on their body because their bones and flesh are still tender. I believe extreme use of force is considered child abuse and we should avoid that.

One discipline method I loved about my mom is that she preferred explaining to you what you did wrong than flogging and when it came to flogging she will still embrace you and explain what you did wrong later.

Even schools adopt this discipline method because many children are deaf to listening but once a little pain is involved you'll see them listen to what you said and avoid doing that thing that caused them to be flogged. This helps children understand the consequences of their actions.

I'd advise parents and also myself to first explain to the child the mistake he/she made, give enough warnings, and use discipline only to correct bad and repeated behavior.

In my opinion, this method has helped many children become respectful, responsible, and well behaved adults and this is an example of good home training.
