Every island has its famous viewpoints.

The places marked on maps, recommended by travel guides, and photographed thousands of times each year.

This wasn't one of them.

I found this stretch of road almost by accident while walking around Monte da Guia, on Faial Island. There were no crowds, no souvenir stalls, no signs inviting me to stop. Just a quiet road, framed by native vegetation, leading my eyes toward the Atlantic.

And then I noticed something.

The landscape wasn't asking to be admired all at once.

It revealed itself slowly.

First, the dark volcanic asphalt stretching ahead. Then the dense greenery hugging the roadside. Beyond that, the calm ocean. And finally, almost hidden beneath the clouds, the unmistakable silhouette of Pico Island rising from the horizon.

It felt less like discovering a viewpoint and more like uncovering a secret.

Perhaps that's why I enjoyed it so much.

In an age where we often travel from one "must-see" location to the next, it's easy to overlook the places that exist between them. Yet those forgotten corners are often where the strongest memories are made.

No queues.

No noise.

No rush to take the perfect photograph before someone walks into the frame.

Just a road, an island, and enough silence to hear the wind moving through the trees.

Photography has changed the way I travel.

I no longer search only for destinations.

I search for interruptions.

Those unexpected moments when something ordinary quietly insists on being noticed.

This road was one of them.

And if I ever return to Monte da Guia, I know I will stop here again—not because I expect the same photograph, but because I know the island will have written a completely different scene.
