I’ve actually been here in the Land of the Rising Sun for quite a while now, even though it often doesn’t feel that way to me. But there’s just no denying it, especially since I’ve really seen and experienced a great deal over all these years.

And just recently, it became clear to us once again that we quickly forget much of what we’ve encountered. Too many new impressions come rushing at us for us to keep everything in our heads. Sometimes that can even be an advantage. But it always amazes me how many images disappear from our minds, even though they once had a firm place there.

A few days ago, when I had business in a small town I used to visit regularly a few years ago, this fact was brought home to me once again. I had some time left and took a short walk through a park, on the edge of which there’s a small temple. There’s a Buddha statue in that temple that suddenly didn’t look familiar to me at all, even though I’d probably seen it many times before. But that was quite a while ago, and my memories didn’t amount to much anymore.

The same was true of the small shrine right next to it. I knew it stood in that very spot, but that was about all. Well, admittedly, there wasn’t all that much to see, but still, I would have liked to have a few more memories stored in my mind

DEUTSCH

It sounds like you're talking about the fleeting nature of experiences, which is especially relatable when traveling and taking in new sights 🌸. Your photo of the temple takes me to that moment, and I'd love to know more about the specific experience of returning to that small town and reenc
