I Will Read It Out Of Your Head

Call it a Math Trick, Magic, or Anything You Like
But let’s play it first. Then I’ll show you how it works.

Let’s play.

You may decide to pick any number, preferable a number you can easily manipulate

Confirm that the last digit you have is a Seven

Try it again with any other number. It will still take you to the same point.

If you have Math-o-Phobia, you can stop here.
But if you want the explanation, let’s look into the mathematics of this "magic trick".

  1. Think of any number - don’t tell me
  2. Multiply it by 5
  3. Multiply that result by 2
  4. Subtract 3

Now look at your answer.
The last digit is 7, isn’t it?

HOW AND WHY IT WORKS

I look at it as managing numbers like a strategist.
Just making sure you are numerically pushed to a specific corner, regardless of where you started.

The Secret: No magic, just math.

Step 2 and 3 are the trap:
×5 then ×2 = ×10

Because 5 times 2 = 10

And here’s the rule: Anything ×10 MUST end in 0.
Look at this exampls
23 × 10 = 230
7 × 10 = 70
1042 × 10 = 10420

So after step 3, your number is secretly 10n. It ends in 0 no matter what n was.

Then step 4: 10n - 3
???0 - 3 = ...7

That’s it. I forced your answer to end in a 0, then I chose what it turns into.

For those whos brain are wired to think Algebra

Step 1:

Think of Any number.let the nunber be n

Step 2:

Multiply it by 5.5n

Step 3:

Multiply that result by 2.2 × 5n = 10n

Step 4:

Subtract 3.10n - 3

Whatever the value of n was, it will end with a zero and subtracting 3 will give us a 7 as last digit.

For those whos brain are wired to think Arithmetic

Remember: Any number Multiplied by 10, you just add a zero to the end. So it will always end in 0.

Step 2 and 3 is where the x10 is hidden in to the trick.

Instade of saying x10 at once.
It brings in factors of 10 which are 5 and 2 [5×2=10]

Conclusion

The more you play with numbers, the more your Math-o-Phobia gradually vanishes. Even mathematics can be fun

YOUR TURN.

This is interesting @manuelhooks. Just that aspect of the factors of 10 split into two multiplication steps and also thinking of a number when subtracted from the results produces 7, this sets the stage on.
As you have rightly said, this is a trick and Not magic.
So let me play with a number that I am thinking about now;
Let the number be z, I will multiply it by 5:
Step1 =5×z =5z
I multiply my product by 2:
Step2 = 2× 5z =10z
I finally subtract 3 from the result of step2
Step3 = (10z-3) ; 7 is expected to be in the answer because, there is 10 & 3.

Here I go, if my z = 6.
Then Step1: 6×5 =30
Step2: 2×30 =60
Step3: 60-3 =57.
An Interesting algebra!
Let open our minds to learn tricks with numbers. It's not a magic.
