Assalamu Alaikum! I hope you are all well, Alhamdulillah I am also well and healthy. Welcome to the first week of the Steemit Engagement Challenge Season 31. This week's theme is "SLC31-W1 || Our Surroundings A Series of Real Life Experiences ; Brickfields & Fuel Stations". And a big thank you to @adeljose ma'am and @kibreay001 brother for organizing such a beautiful competition. Today I will take you to a place where the foundation of our modern city is built. A little away from the hustle and bustle of our mechanical life, those stories hidden among the dust and sand and the hot flames of fire, today as a serial reporter, my destination today is [a huge brick kiln in South Keraniganj]. So let's find out more detailed information about this brick kiln.

1. What type of service location did you visit? Briefly describe it.

Brick kiln scene

I visited a brick kiln today, either a fuel station or a brick kiln, as per the rules of this competition. Although this place is quite familiar to me, I tried to see it anew through the eyes of a reporter today.

  • Location of the brick kiln: This brick kiln is located on the other side of the Fatulla Buriganga River, right next to the Brahmangaon Konda road in South Keraniganj.

  • Distance and means of transport to the brick kiln: The distance from my house to this brick kiln was about [3-4] kilometers. I crossed the Fatulla Buriganga River and reached here by auto-rickshaw, enjoying the cool breeze of the riverbank. However, you can also reach here by auto-rickshaws, motorcycles and other small vehicles.

  • Time of visiting the brick kiln: When I reached this brick kiln on the side of the Brahmangaon Konda road in South Keraniganj, it was exactly 3.40 pm. But the sun was still hot overhead. The brick kiln was surrounded by dust, the smell of coal, the scent of burnt earth, and black smoke billowing into the sky.

2. Operational history & Location (Steem Atlas pin)

I observed this brick kiln and talked to the employees, locals and the experience of the elders of the area and came to know that this brick kiln in South Keraniganj has been operating on the side of Brahmangaon Konda road for more than [approximately 15/20] years. But now, with the passage of time, the chimney and brick burning method of this brick kiln have been modernized a lot.

3. Type of work & Workers’ lifestyle

As soon as I entered this brick kiln in Brahmangaon Konda, South Keraniganj, this huge chimney caught my eye from outside. Smoke was continuously coming out of this chimney of the brick kiln, which was looking at the sky. I was standing inside this brick kiln, observing the work and thinking, how many people's sweat is behind the smoke coming out of this chimney.

Thousands of raw bricks are lined up in rows across the field surrounding this brick kiln, waiting to dry in the sun and harden. The raw bricks made of clay stand like intricate structures, waiting to dry in the sun and harden in the molds.

When the sky suddenly becomes cloudy or rain is forecast, the workers working in this brick kiln become very busy. Because I have seen from close up the desperate efforts to cover the bricks made of raw clay with plastic paper or tarpaulin after they are dried in the sun.

This is the most dangerous and hottest part of the brick kiln. I saw how the workers were pouring drums of coal into the fierce flames. Their struggle to withstand the intense heat of the brick kiln fire and the heat of the sun overhead amazed me.

Burnt bricks have been removed from the brick kiln site.

When, after overcoming all the adversities of this brick kiln, the bricks, burnt to a bright red in the heat of the fire, are stacked like a mountain around the kiln, the long hard work of the workers working in this brick kiln is realized.

The workers working in this brick kiln spend their nights in these dilapidated houses with rickety bamboo and straw roofs in a corner of the brick kiln. However, in return for the sacrifices made by the workers working in this brick kiln, we sleep safely in the big buildings of the city.

39021.jpgA very beautiful scene at the brick kiln

The workers of this brick kiln located on the side of Brahmangaon Konda Road in South Keraniganj usually work from dawn to dusk. The workers working in this brick kiln have no weekly holidays. However, I have seen women workers working in this brick kiln along with men. The workers working in this brick kiln are at risk of respiratory problems while working in the dust, but they are still working with a smile.

While I was talking to the workers working in this brick kiln, an elderly worker was telling me, "Our lives are mixed with this soil, and he said that when this soil burns, it becomes bricks and when our lives burn, our entire family lives." Hearing this statement of the worker working in this brick kiln left a deep mark on my mind.

4. Environmental impact & (With pictures + videos)

Black smoke is continuously coming out of the chimney.
38804.jpg

I am saying from my real experience that although these brick kilns are very useful for our development, there is no way to avoid their environmental impact. The black smoke of these brick kilns and the use of the upper layer of soil is very threatening to nature. The picture above shows that the smoke coming out of the huge chimney of the brick kiln is causing air pollution.

However, in this mechanical civilization, there are currently few alternatives to bricks for all of us to survive. However, in the interest of protecting our environment, the current government has made the use of modern chimneys mandatory, so pollution has come under control to some extent than before.

I recorded a 1.20 second video of my visit to the brick kiln. You can watch the video here.👇

My personal feelings and conclusions

I will say one last thing, this brick kiln tour in South Keraniganj was very emotional for me. Behind every brick of the huge buildings in which we live a safe life in the city, there is the blood-drenched labor of the people working in this brick kiln. This brick kiln is not just a business center, it is a living history of the struggle of thousands of poor and suffering people. I am ending my report here with respect for the selfless labor of the workers in this brick kiln.
