Where is this place located, how can visitors reach it, and when did you visit it?

This place is located inside Akwanga Market. Visitors can reach this place by visiting the old Akwanga Market; from the market, the visitor can then take a walk to where they are selling traditional items. I visited this place yesterday being 12th August, 2026, when I went to the market to buy some foodstuffs; I came across this place.

The place is kind of hidden from the market because it is inside the market, where it can be hard for someone to see. Also, the people who are selling traditional items in the place are mostly old men.

What tradition, craft, occupation, food culture, or community practice makes this place culturally significant?

1000713491.jpg

It is the traditional craft that makes the place culturally significant. There are traditional cups, pots, plates, chairs, and other traditional items that are used for traditional activities and sold in the place. Traditional medicines are also available in the place, and in this place, the mode of sitting and attending to customers is done traditionally.

How has this heritage been preserved and passed from one generation to another?

1000713491.jpg1000713494.jpg

This heritage has been preserved and passed from one generation to another by maintaining this same place for years and through the selling of the available traditional items in the place. As I said, the place is kind of different from the market, and it is specifically for traditional items and traditional medicine.

How does this living heritage contribute to the local community or economy today?

Well, most of these traditional dealers are not usually wealthy, but they contribute so much to the local community through the provision of traditional care and the sale of traditional items, and they also pay levies to the government.

What can visitors see, learn, or experience here that helps them understand the local culture and heritage?

Visitors can see what is sold in the place, like traditional pots, plates, hand craft items, and visitors can learn how all of these items are made. Also, visitors can learn about the local culture and heritage of the people, like how things are done.

What challenges could threaten this heritage, and what can be done to help preserve it for future generations?

1000713491.jpg

The challenges that could threaten this heritage are civilisation and development, and also government policy. However, civilisation is something that cannot be stopped; the more people become civilised, the more this traditional place will become less relevant to people. Also, the government can decide to come up with a policy that could stop people from using traditional items.

This traditional alleyway inside the Akwanga market is really quite interesting. The way the elderly have preserved traditional utensils, objects, and indigenous medical systems in a corner of the city's main market in the midst of modernity is truly rare. I think the touch of modern civilization and the lack of interest of the new generation are the main reasons for the disappearance of such traditional places. We may not be able to stop the change in government policies or modernity, but if such places can be highlighted as cultural tourism centers, they will not only survive, but the income of the elderly people associated with them will also improve somewhat. Thank you for allowing us to visualize local heritage in this way. Best wishes to you in this contest. 😊
