Assalamu-Alaikum-wa-Rahmatullahi- wa-Barakatuh!
Sabr صَبْر is one of the most repeated commands in the Qur’an(as to attract the full attention). It’s not passive waiting—it’s steadfastness, self-control, and trust in Allah when life gets hard.
1. What the Qur’an Says About Sabr
Allah directly commands patience and links it to success(in every situation):
"O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient."(no matter how hard)
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:153
"And be patient, for indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good."
Surah Hud 11:115
2. The 3 Types of Sabr in the Qur’an
Scholars divide patience into 3 categories, all mentioned in the Qur’an:
A. Patience in Obedience (i.e. adhering to God's rules)
Sticking to prayer, fasting, honesty, even when it’s hard.
"And enjoin prayer upon your family and be steadfast therein."
Surah Taha 20:132
B. Patience in Avoiding Sin (resistant to sin eventhough it's hard)
Resisting temptation when the opportunity is there.
"And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and an evil way."
Surah Al-Isra 17:32
C. Patience with Hardship(during any fate)
Holding firm when you face loss, sickness, or delay.
"And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient."
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:155
3. Why Sabr is Special
Allah is With the Patient
"Indeed, Allah is with the patient."
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:153
Allah Loves the Patient
"And Allah loves the steadfast."
Surah Ali Imran 3:146

The Reward is Unlimited
"Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account."
Surah Az-Zumar 39:10
4. How the Qur’an Tells Us to Practice Sabr
Remember the end result
"So be patient. Indeed, the [best] outcome is for the righteous."
Surah Hud 11:49Stay with righteous company
"And keep yourself patient with those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His countenance."
Surah Al-Kahf 18:28Make du’a(pray to seek) for sabr(patience)
"Our Lord, pour upon us patience and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people."
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:250
5. The Danger of Losing Sabr
"And do not be like she who untwisted her spun yarn after it was strong."(a parable from the Holy Qur'an)
Surah An-Nahl 16:92
Giving up after starting erases your progress. Sabr(patience) is what locks in your good effort.
6. Practical Steps to Build Sabr(patience) Today
- Pause before reacting: When upset, say Astaghfirullah(repentance to Allah) and delay your response 10 seconds.
- Connect hardship to reward: Remind yourself: "This is building my akhirah(here-after)."
- Use the Prophet’s du’a:
"O Turner of the hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion."
Read stories of the Prophets: Ayyub A.S, Ya’qub A.S, and Muhammad ﷺ are full of sabr (being patience) lessons.

Key Verses to Memorize
| Topic | Verse | Arabic |
|---|---|---|
| Help comes with sabr | 2:153 |
| Allah is with the patient | 2:153 |
| Unlimited reward | 39:10 |
| Good ending for the patient | 11:49 |
| Du’a for sabr | 2:250 |
Bottom Line
Sabr is the skill that makes every other act of worship possible. Without it, you quit when tired. With it, you get Allah’s help, unlimited reward, and a good ending.
Start small: Pick one thing today that tests your patience and respond with dhikr (Allah's remembrance)instead of reacting. That’s sabr in action.
May Allah make us among the patient and grant us Jannah(paradise) without reckoning. Ameen.
