How Dry Farms Change the Life of Small Animals

We have experienced the rains and it was all over the news with the floods coming in. But lately it's just been a bit cloudy and sunny.

It hasn't rained in almost two weeks. Soon that season will be over everywhere. Some places didn't even experience the rain as strongly as other places like the city of Accra.

So it's technically almost dry season time and we'll soon be in the last quarter of 2026.

When the dry weather arrives at a large farm, all of the struggles and difficulties intensify for all of the small animals that live on that farm, especially if it's large. Without the leaves, there are no longer any branches or coverings for them to hide behind. Grasscutters and mice who used to have it easy, no longer have any coverings and so you can imagine their new experience with predators and even food.

The droughts further reduce the availability of resources. The leaves turn into a dried, brittle brown thing that you're seeing and the sun dries up the soil.

The birds of prey can easily see the small animals from far away. The scorched soil that has become slightly harder than when it was wet season, makes it even harder to dig holes.
So, the rodents stay around the field corn stalks and eat the fallen seeds. That just means trapping these rodents is easy.

The villagers actually take advantage of this dry season. They set lots of traps to catch rodents. Even the obvious pathways form from the rodents traveling between the crops. Since things are more dry, when they step on a brittle dried leaf, the noise travels, enough for predators to hear.

So although we our farming experience changes, the type of crops we grow also changes and put own daily lives also changes with the change in season, it happens to the animals that live on the farm too.
