Farming season is at its peak here in the valley of Kashmir, though it is now nearing its end in the coming weeks. People are enthusiastically engaged in agricultural activities, knowing that the effort they put in during these days will determine their returns at the end of the year. A large portion of the rural population is involved in the horticulture sector, which stands as one of the most significant economic pillars of our valley after tourism.

I also belong to a family that owns orchards in and around our village, and this brings a fair share of responsibility on my shoulders. Since my siblings are occupied with their respective jobs, I try to contribute as much as I can. Despite being employed in a government job, I still maintain a keen interest in farming, as it provides meaningful economic support to our household.

For this reason, I woke up very early in the morning. I began my day by offering morning prayers and making supplications, then returned home. After that, I engaged in some physical exercise to keep myself fit, calm, and composed throughout the day, while also burning calories that might otherwise prove harmful. Once I had worked up a good sweat, I went inside, freshened up, helped my mother with a few tasks, and then had my breakfast.

Soon after, I headed to one of our nearby orchards where I had to spray a systemic fungicide on the apple trees. Since the orchard is small, it did not take much time, and I managed to complete the task before leaving for the office. After returning home, I quickly freshened up and left for work. Taking a shortcut route, I reached my office within 20 to 25 minutes and immediately got involved in my duties. My work mainly involved verifying the data uploaded by subordinates on the portal, carefully reviewing it, and forwarding it for further approval so that it could be made accessible to the public in the form of revenue records.

I continued with this work until the afternoon, after which I returned home a bit early, as we had to visit my sister-in-law, who had delivered a baby about two weeks ago. It was important for us to be there with her during this time, and I had to take my siblings along as well.

Upon reaching home, I had something to eat, as I was quite hungry. Just as we were preparing to leave, it started raining, which delayed our departure. We waited for the rain to stop, and once it did, we set out, again taking a shortcut that got us there within 10 to 15 minutes instead of the usual half an hour or more.

We spent some quality time there, were offered tea, and most importantly, got to hold and play with the newborn. Watching her tiny hands and innocent face was truly heartwarming. Holding her in my arms made me reflect on the wonder of life—how a child develops over nine months within the mother’s womb. It felt like a quiet reminder of the beauty and power of creation.

We returned home around 9 PM. After dinner, I went to my room. This time, instead of scrolling through social media, I chose to watch Mad Max: Fury Road, a movie I have watched many times, yet it never fails to captivate me.
