SLC-S33/W5 | Beyond the Map : The Living Heritage, Ramna Park
My Fellow Steemians,
I am delighted to participate in SLC-S33/W5 | Beyond the Map : The Living Heritage given by @sohanurrahman. Its an wonderful opportunity to show a living heritage in Dhaka city, Bangladesh. I'm writing one of the living heritage & culturally significant place known as Ramna Park.
Ramna Park is located in the Ramna area of central Dhaka, beside Shahbag, Dhaka University, and Suhrawardy Udyan. It is one of the well-known green spaces in the Dhaka. Visitors can easily get there by bus, rickshaw, CNG, car, or any type of public transportation services from different parts of the city. I visited Ramna Park recently and learning about its historical and cultural importance of this place.
The cultural importance of Ramna Park is mainly connected with Bengali traditions and celebrations. The most notable one is the celebration of Pohela Boishakh, the Bengali New Year. Ramna Batamul is especially famous for its traditional musical programme organized by Chhayanaut. Every year, many men and women go there to welcome the New Year with Bengali songs and cultural activities. The surrounding area also becomes lively with traditional dress, food, flowers, and different kinds of small businesses during the celebration. Different types of Bengali food such as rice with water soked rice, Hilsha fish fry, Taki fish fry, onion etc become available there known as bengeli traditional food. Men & women wear traditional dress. Basically men wear Panjabi, paijamas & women wear white saree to celebrate the occasion.
This heritage has mainly been kept alive through regular cultural activities and public participation. The tradition of celebrating Pohela Boishakh at Ramna has continued for many years. Older people introduced these traditions to their children, and the younger generation continues to take part in them. Cultural organizations, schools, families, and the media also play an important role in keeping Bengali songs, customs, and celebrations alive. In this way, the cultural connection with Ramna has gradually passed from one generation to the next.
Ramna Park attracts many people throughout the year, so it also provides opportunities for local businesses. Rickshaw and CNG drivers, food sellers, tea stalls, flower sellers, photographers, and other small vendors can earn money from visitors. During Pohela Boishakh and other special occasions, the number of visitors increases considerably, Especially in every Friday people come to visit the place with their families & loved ones. which creates more business opportunities around the area. Traditional clothes, food, flowers, and other festival-related products are also sold during the occasions.
Visitors can enjoy the green surroundings, trees, walking paths, lake, and peaceful atmosphere of the park. They can also experience the cultural side of Dhaka, especially during Pohela Boishakh. People wearing traditional Bengali clothes, cultural programmes, Bengali songs, traditional food, and festive activities give visitors a good idea about Bengali culture. For me, the most interesting part is seeing how a public park can become connected with people's memories, celebrations, and everyday life.
Ramna Park faces several challenges because Dhaka is becoming more crowded and polluted every year. Excessive visitors, littering, damage to trees and plants, pollution of the water body, and poor maintenance could gradually affect the beauty and value of the park. Large cultural events can also create additional waste if they are not properly managed.
To preserve Ramna Park, the authorities should take better care of the trees, lake, walking areas, and other facilities. Proper waste management should be ensured, especially during large festivals. Already the authority has taken some important step about this like, smoking and drug are strongly prohivited in the compound & withn some distance there exixt some waste box. Visitors also have a responsibility to keep the park clean and avoid damaging its natural environment. At the same time, cultural programmes and traditions should continue so that younger generations can learn about and maintain this important part of Dhaka's heritage.
