A Journey Through History | The Ancient Mughal Sarai

The history of the Mughals in Kashmir dates back around four centuries. The Mughal Empire established its presence in Kashmir in the late 16th century, after which a well-defined route was used to enter the Valley. This historic route, now known as the Mughal Road, connects Shopian with Rajouri and Poonch and served as the principal passage for the Mughal emperors and their royal caravans.

Since the emperors travelled with large and magnificent entourages, special resting places were developed along the route. These were known as sarais (caravan inns), where the royal family, officials, soldiers, and attendants could halt during their journey. Among the most notable are the Shopian Sarai and the Khampora Sarai, located in a village in Budgam district. Both are known for their Mughal-era architecture and historical importance.

Khampora Sarai, situated near my area, is a particularly beautiful example of Mughal architecture. Its elegant arches, domes, and traditional design reflect the grandeur of that era. Having stood for nearly 400 years, however, the structure is now in a deteriorated condition. Although it is protected as a heritage monument, no major renovation or structural alterations are permitted in order to preserve its historical authenticity.

Despite its weathered appearance, the sarai possesses a unique architectural charm that continues to attract visitors and history enthusiasts alike. During my visit to Khampora Sarai, I recorded a video to showcase this remarkable monument and share a glimpse of its fascinating past. Through this video, I have tried to present the beauty of the entire sarai and introduce viewers to an important chapter of Kashmir’s Mughal heritage.
