An Evening Escape to Yusmarg with Friends

A few weeks ago, after finishing our office work, my close friend and I decided to take a short trip to Yusmarg. We have been best friends since our school days, so spontaneous trips like this always become memorable. Yusmarg lies at the end of the same route on which our Block Office is located, making it an easy and convenient destination for an evening getaway.

The road to Yusmarg is always lively with tourists. Visitors from different parts of India, along with local residents, travel this scenic route throughout the year. Their love for this beautiful destination has made Yusmarg one of the most renowned tourist attractions in Kashmir. Its close proximity to Srinagar is one of its biggest advantages, allowing people to visit even in the evening, enjoy the cool breeze and breathtaking landscapes, and comfortably return home before nightfall. People from nearby districts like Budgam and Pulwama also frequently visit Yusmarg to spend quality time with family and friends while enjoying its refreshing weather.

On our way, we stopped at Charar-e-Sharief, where another close friend of ours lives. We called him, and he happily joined us. Now the three of us continued our journey towards Yusmarg, enjoying every moment of the drive.

Yusmarg is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Kashmir. However, the lack of basic infrastructure creates certain challenges for visitors. One major issue is the absence of reliable mobile network coverage. In today’s digital era, where most payments are made online, poor connectivity becomes a serious inconvenience for both local and international tourists. Many visitors have to rely on cash because digital transactions often become impossible.

Yusmarg also has a rich cultural and cinematic history. Several films were shot here during the 1960s and 1970s, making it a well-known destination long before modern tourism expanded in the region. It is often referred to as the “Meadow of Jesus.” Its lush green meadows resemble a perfectly laid carpet, and walking barefoot across the soft grass feels even more comfortable than walking on the finest carpet. Although the prolonged dry spell had slightly affected the greenery, the landscape still looked peaceful and captivating.

Because of recent security concerns, visitors are currently not allowed to venture deep into the surrounding forests. While these restrictions are understandable, they also limit the overall experience that Yusmarg once offered. Some tourists are still hesitant to visit Kashmir due to safety concerns, which has affected tourist numbers to some extent.

Despite these challenges, our short visit was refreshing and memorable. We spent the evening exploring the meadows, enjoying the pleasant weather, and capturing the natural beauty around us. As the sun began to set, we started our journey back home with beautiful memories, grateful for another wonderful day spent in one of Kashmir’s most charming destinations.
