1. Introduction:

Name of the hospital/healthcare center:

Kurmitola Multicare Specialized Hospital / Kurmitola General Hospital.

Location

Located on New Airport Road, next to Armed Forces Medical College, and opposite Hotel Radisson Blue Water Garden, in the MES area of Dhaka Cantonment.

Purpose of the establishment or brief introduction:

My mother (Nargis Begum) is over 50 years old. Recently, I came to Kurmitola General Hospital for specialist treatment due to severe joint pain in her legs and knee problems. I have had the experience of coming to this hospital several times before for blood donation and treatment of my wife and child. This government-funded institution has been providing Tk 10 treatment services to the common people at a very affordable price. I was very pleased to see the beautiful marble plaque carved at the hospital entrance.

What type of medical services are provided:

Apart from the emergency department, patients are regularly seen in the outpatient departments of Medicine, Orthosurgery, Pediatrics, Gynecology, Dermatology, Ear, Nose, and Throat, Eye, and Dental. There are also pathology, blood bank, ECG, digital X-ray, angiogram, and ICU facilities.

2. Location and transportation:

How easy it is to find the hospital:

In my opinion, this hospital is very easy to find, as it is located along Dhaka Airport Road. This huge building is easily visible from any vehicle, just opposite the Radisson Blu Hotel.

Public transportation or parking facilities:

You can take any bus from Cantonment, Mirpur, Badda, Uttara or Tongi and get off right in front of the hospital. According to my observation, the transportation system for patients coming by bus is very easy. Besides, it has its own parking and ambulance facilities.

Directions and accessibility at the entrance:

There is a large information desk at the main entrance of the hospital. What I liked most was the 'Location Board' on the wall, which makes it easy to reach any department. I liked the fact that wheelchairs were arranged next to the information desk for patients with walking difficulties.

3. Infrastructure and environment

Cleanliness of the building:

Crowded OPD Waiting Area of Kurmitola General Hospital

The image of cleanliness that comes to mind when you hear the words government hospital has completely changed after coming here. The green plants around the hospital and the sparkling environment inside and outside really impressed me.

Condition of the waiting room:

There are sufficient benches for patients in front of each outpatient department, including Orthosurgery (Rooms 242-243). Moreover, I found the purified cold and plain water filters installed by the Rotary Club to be quite useful. And the most convenient thing is that there is a cafeteria (e.g. K.G.H. Cafeteria-2) on each floor for patients or relatives to have small meals.

Cafeteria facilities located on each floor for patients and visitors

Toilet and hand washing facilities:

There are toilets and basins on each floor. However, I think the authorities need to pay more attention to cleanliness when the number of patients increases around noon.

Air conditioning, seating arrangements and safety:

The entire building is equipped with central AC. There is a spacious elevator system for quick access to the multi-storey building.

4. Medical services:

Doctors' use and skills:

From my experience of coming here several times, except for the pediatric department, the presence of junior and intern doctors is more common in other departments than senior or experienced doctors. I think that in many cases they prescribe simple medicines without listening to the patients completely. However, I have seen that when these same doctors are shown in a private chamber outside, their behavior, attentive listening to the history of the disease and the type of treatment are completely different! In my opinion, it is actually a matter of the psychological mindset of the doctors. However, fortunately, in my mother's case, the medical officer in the orthosurgery department spoke with enough attention.

Cooperation of nurses and other staff:

I found the information center and staff to be quite polite and cooperative.

Quality of information conveyed to the patient:

Although the children's section provides very good advice to parents, I felt that the speaking time was a bit short due to the overcrowding in other sections.

Effectiveness of the emergency department:

The emergency department is open 24 hours a day.

5. Tests and technology

Lab and diagnostic facilities:

It has facilities for pathological examination, digital X-ray (basement-2), ECG, brain CT scan and MRI. From my own experience of donating blood, I can say that the work of the blood bank and pathology department here is very well organized.

Modern medical equipment:

The testing equipment is quite modern.

Time to receive reports:

Although I haven't had any done, their X-ray reports take relatively less time.

6. Waiting time

How long it takes to register:

To avoid the long queue at the counter, I had already purchased an online e-ticket from the kgh.bindu.health portal. In my opinion, this is a great initiative to save time. I verified the ticket in just 2-3 minutes.

Waiting time to see a doctor:

Even after purchasing an e-ticket, we had to wait for about 25-30 minutes to see the doctor, according to the serial number (serial number: 34).

How long it takes to get reports or medicines:

After seeing the doctor, it took me another 15 minutes to get free medicine from the in-house pharmacy.

7. Cost:

  • Medical fees: The ticket fee for the outpatient department is only 10 taka (online/offline).

  • Testing costs: The cost here is much lower than at any diagnostic center outside (e.g., X-ray 200 taka, CT scan 2000 taka).

  • Other charges: There were no additional or hidden charges except for purchasing cafeteria food.

  • Whether the cost is reasonable according to the quality of service: In my opinion, it is extraordinary to get such a wonderful environment and infrastructure for a ticket of just 10 taka, but doctors need to pay a little more attention to treatment.

8. Patient experience:

1000031095.jpg

  • Treatment with patients: I have 100% confidence in the pediatric department, the doctors treat children with great affection. However, I think doctors in other departments need to listen to patients with a little more empathy.

  • Privacy protection: Patient privacy is maintained excellently.

  • Complaint mechanism: There is an information center and drop-box on the ground floor.

  • Overall satisfaction: Despite the clean environment, cafeterias on every floor, online ticketing, and modern amenities, my experience was a mixed one due to the sheer number of junior doctors providing treatment in the general outdoor setting.

1000031089.jpg1000031088.jpg

9. Pros:

  • In my opinion, the convenience of getting services easily through e-tickets kgh.bindu.health for just 10 taka is one of the best aspects.

  • Well-organized information center and wheelchair facility at the entrance.

  • Cafeteria on each floor for the refreshment of patients and relatives, filtered water, and a modern elevator.

  • Excellent child-oriented medical system and orderly service from the blood bank.

  • Glass-enclosed clean environment and very affordable diagnostic tests.

10. Areas for improvement:

  • In my opinion, it is necessary to ensure the presence of senior specialists in the field, rather than relying only on interns or juniors.

  • The mindset of doctors in providing services in government hospitals should be changed.

  • I think the cleanliness of the toilets needs to be improved a little more in the afternoon.

12. Conclusion

Who is this hospital or healthcare center suitable for?

In my opinion, this hospital is an ideal place to get basic blood tests, digital X-rays, pediatric treatments, and quick outpatient facilities at a very low cost.

Would you like to use the service again in the future? Whether or not you would recommend it to others and why

I will definitely come again for my child's treatment or for blood donation. However, I think there would be some disagreement in recommending it to everyone just for the low cost, as there is a clear difference in the attitude of doctors in private chambers and government outpatients, as experienced doctors are not always available for serious complications of elderly patients.
