Welcome to the 35th tutorial in my Steemit series! Last four tutorials focus on abuse and spinning on the Steem blockchain. These harmful practices can disrupt the community and lower content quality. Abuse happens when users take unfair advantage of the platform. Examples include excessive self-voting, using fake accounts, or bypassing rules. These actions harm the fairness of Steemit’s reward system.

In this tutorial, I will explain comment spamming its impact on the chain. I will share examples to help you recognize these issues. I will also provide tips to avoid them and contribute positively to Steemit.

Comment spamming is a major problem. It affects user experience and lowers content quality. Let us learn about comment spamming and how to prevent it.

What is Comment Spamming?

Comment spamming means posting irrelevant or repetitive comments. Our goal is steemit is to increase friends by engaging them. We can do so by reading more of others' posts and comment. In making these comments, we should comment in such a way that when the comment is read, it is understood that the comment was made after reading the post above. Otherwise, if we write the same message repeatedly in the comment, which means that I did not read the post above and only commented with some common and ordinary words, then that is comment spamming.

Examples include:

  • "Nice post" copied on multiple posts.
  • Thanks for sharing
  • Thanks for your feedback
  • Thanks, for your feedback
  • Thank you too
  • Thank you
  • Thank you very much

Comment spamming is annoying. It clutters the platform and wastes users’ time.

Why Do Users Spam Comments?

  1. To gain visibility.
  2. To promote external websites.
  3. To earn rewards unfairly.
  4. To show their engagement and activity.

Effects of Comment Spamming

Spamming is something by which someone may take temporary advantage of the platform but cannot do anything good in the long run. Since hard working users are deprived of this, spamming is not tolerated. Some communities want to get the support from whale curators. In such cases, engagement is always seen in communities, but if that engagement is spamming, then it will be evaluated wrongly. Therefore, spamming is prevented to maintain the health of the community and it is very important.
For Spamming, mainly-

  • Genuine comments get buried.
  • Users lose interest in discussions.
  • The platform’s quality decreases.

How to Avoid Comment Spamming

To avoid spamming, you can keep the following tips in mind:-

  1. Post meaningful and relevant comments.
  2. Avoid copy-pasting the same comment.
  3. Do not add links unless necessary.
  4. Engage in real discussions. Read a post carefully and comment in such a way that when your comment is read, it is understood that you have definitely read the post.
  5. Avoid making small comments like the examples I gave above.
  6. If you feel that you have nothing to write, then it is better to refrain from writing but please don’t spam.
  7. You can write small thanks, greetings, and good wishes in the replies to the comments but not in such a way in the reply to the posts.

What to Do If You See Comment Spam

  1. Downvote the spam comment.
  2. Report the user to moderators.
  3. Encourage genuine discussions in your posts.

Above all, if you love the work and spend time on it, your comments will definitely be beautiful. Comment spamming is harmful to Steemit. It disrupts meaningful conversations. Always focus on quality interactions. A positive environment helps everyone grow. Avoid comment spamming and make it real. It will help you to get good friends in the long run on this platform. It will be sustainable growth for you here in steemit. Thanks.

Hello moderator, I'm a university student from China currently researching Web3 social media. Since the Steemit user guidelines don't provide detailed explanations about the self-governance mechanisms of Steemit sub-communities, I wanted to ask you a question: If someone posts inappropriate content in this community, how do you mute such a post? What specific actions do you take? And how do you mute the user? Are your actions performed on-chain?

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question amidst your busy schedule! Wishing you all the best.

Thank you so much for sharing this. This open one eyes to see the need to make quality and original comment and not just anyhow comments. I can also called comment spamming as anyhow comments
