RIZZO 🇮🇹🇬🇧

A fare l'omelia laica, in quella piazza, davanti a tanta gente, lui, Marco Rizzo.

🇬🇧
I've known Marco Rizzo for 40 years, maybe even longer. Maybe as kids we crossed paths in the Curva Maratona cheering on our Torino.
I knew his mother, he knows mine.
He's not wrong when he says that today the so-called left is chasing gay pride, whereas once they used to hand out flyers in front of Fiat.

Rizzo is a Communist. I don't care if he's chasing Vannacci now; for me, he's still a Communist.
Perhaps an atypical Communist; unlike others, more than he was a Fiat president, he loved pussy, Torino, clothes, our friend Oskar's Statutes, music, and sports.
I repeat, I don't care about his current political path. If he had continued with his little Communist party, I would have followed him without a second thought.
It doesn't matter if we were at zero, point something, I would have followed him.

He knew Fidel. How many people today can say the same thing?
Once you've known giants, it's hard to relate to dwarves.
His current choices never make me forget what happened.
1996, after a brief illness, my father, a trade unionist who had been active in the Turin PCI and then in Rifondazione after Occhetto's betrayal, passed away.

A civil funeral, a neighborhood blocked by people, red flags, a band playing, the municipal electricity company where my father worked all his life sends its vehicles with sirens blaring. It's not the unions who send them, it's the managers who send them, people who didn't share any political views with my father, quite the opposite, but who respected him and wanted to show it at that moment.
Giving the secular homily, in that square, in front of so many people, was him, Marco Rizzo.

So Marco can take whatever political paths he wants (I'm sorry he's taking these), but for me he'll always be someone who, from an improvised stage, surrounded by people, remembered my father, whom he knew well.
I'm convinced he remains a friend of Cuba, which he knows well, having been there several times on official delegations; certain things can't be erased.

So don't ask me to say negative things about him; he made his choices, but the past doesn't change, it can't be erased. You can even try to put on a new suit, but ultimately, you only look good in the ones you've worn your whole life.
Since that morning 30 years ago, since that secular funeral, a lot of water has passed under the bridge; we've both aged, not badly.
Marco remains a friend, come what may.
I won't forget.
