Ciao a tutti amici e amiche di Italy e di Steemit.
In questi giorni si sta parlando molto di Coldcard, uno degli hardware wallet più conosciuti nel mondo Bitcoin.
Il motivo? È stato scoperto un bug che, in alcune versioni del firmware, avrebbe compromesso la generazione della seed, cioè quelle 12 o 24 parole da cui dipende l'accesso ai propri bitcoin.
Un attacco che ha portato al furto di centinaia di bitcoin, per un valore di decine di milioni di dollari. (Rif.)
Quando si parla di sicurezza, soprattutto nella self-custody, viene spontaneo chiedersi se il nostro hardware wallet sia sicuro.
È chiaro che nessun software è immune dagli errori. Nessun dispositivo può garantire il rischio zero.
Ed è proprio per questo che molti, quando il valore dei bitcoin custoditi inizia a diventare importante, scelgono un livello di protezione in più: il multisig.
In parole semplici, invece di affidare tutto a un'unica seed, il controllo dei bitcoin viene distribuito su più chiavi. Così, se una di queste dovesse essere compromessa, da sola non sarebbe sufficiente per spostare i fondi.
Attenzione però: questo non significa che tutti debbano correre a usare il multisig.
Per chi sta iniziando, o possiede una quantità limitata di bitcoin, un buon hardware wallet aggiornato e usato correttamente resta una soluzione più che valida.
Cosa ci portiamo a casa da questa vicenda?
Che anche gli strumenti considerati molto sicuri possono contenere bug. Questo non significa che gli hardware wallet non siano affidabili: rimangono una delle migliori soluzioni per la custodia autonoma dei bitcoin.
La vera differenza la fa il modo in cui gestiamo la nostra sicurezza. Aggiornare il firmware, seguire le comunicazioni ufficiali, conservare correttamente i backup e, quando il patrimonio cresce, valutare anche una soluzione multisig, sono tutti passi che possono fare la differenza.
Bitcoin ci offre una libertà straordinaria. Ma, come ogni grande libertà, richiede anche responsabilità.

When we talk about security, especially in the context of self-custody, it is natural to wonder whether our hardware wallet is truly safe.
It is clear that no software is immune to errors. No device can guarantee zero risk.
This is exactly why many people, when the value of the bitcoin they hold starts to become significant, choose an additional layer of protection: multisig.
Simply put, instead of relying on a single seed, control of the bitcoin is distributed across multiple keys. This means that if one of them is compromised, it alone would not be enough to move the funds.
However, this does not mean everyone should immediately switch to multisig.
For those who are just starting out, or who hold a smaller amount of bitcoin, a good, updated hardware wallet used correctly remains a more than valid solution.
So, what can we learn from this situation?
That even tools considered highly secure can contain bugs. This does not mean hardware wallets are unreliable: they remain one of the best solutions for Bitcoin self-custody.
The real difference comes from how we manage our own security. Keeping firmware updated, following official communications, storing backups correctly, and, as your holdings grow, considering a multisig setup are all steps that can make a real difference.
Bitcoin gives us extraordinary freedom. But, like any great freedom, it also requires responsibility.

For me, the main lesson isn't that Coldcard is "bad," but that no security solution is perfect.
Self-custody is about understanding the risks, keeping your devices updated, and choosing the right level of protection for your needs.
That's also why I wanted to mention multisig as an option for those holding larger amounts of Bitcoin.😊
