Are We Seeing Spoofing on the STEEM Market?
Today I noticed something interesting on both the STEEM/USDC and STEEM/USDT markets on Binance.
Several enormous buy and sell walls appeared almost simultaneously, each containing more than 200,000 STEEM. This immediately caught my attention.
For many traders, these walls may look like strong support or resistance. But appearances can be deceiving.
What is Spoofing?
One possible explanation is a practice known as spoofing.
Spoofing is a market manipulation technique where large traders place huge buy or sell orders without intending to execute them.
The objective is to influence market psychology by making other traders believe there is significant buying or selling pressure.
Typical goals include:
- Creating fear or uncertainty.
- Triggering panic selling.
- Creating FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out).
- Influencing short-term price movements.
- Encouraging other traders to react emotionally.
Very often, these large orders disappear just before the market reaches them.
Why Order Books Can Be Misleading
Many traders rely heavily on the order book when making trading decisions.
Seeing a buy wall of over 200,000 STEEM may give the impression that the price has strong support.
Likewise, a massive sell wall may discourage buyers from entering the market.
However, experienced traders know that these walls can vanish within seconds if they were never intended to be filled.
This is why completed trades are much more important than open orders.
Is This Happening on STEEM?
The current order books on STEEM/USDC and STEEM/USDT certainly resemble situations often associated with spoofing.
Of course, an order book alone cannot prove market manipulation. These could simply be legitimate large orders placed by traders who genuinely wish to buy or sell.
Nevertheless, seeing almost identical large walls on both trading pairs raises interesting questions and serves as a reminder that order books should always be interpreted with caution.
My Advice
Never assume that every large wall is real.
Instead, watch how the market behaves:
- Does the wall remain in place?
- Does it move?
- Does it disappear when the price approaches?
- Is it actually executed?
The answers to these questions often tell you much more than the wall itself.
As traders, we should focus on facts rather than emotions.
Disclaimer
This post reflects my personal observations and opinions based on the public Binance order book. I am not accusing Binance or any individual trader of market manipulation. The order book alone cannot prove spoofing, and readers should always do their own research before making investment or trading decisions.

I found this to be a very interesting analysis. If spoofing is happening on the Steem market, it can create a false impression of buying or selling pressure and may mislead traders into making poor decisions. Transparency and careful monitoring of the order book are essential to maintaining confidence in the market. Thank you for sharing your observations and encouraging discussion on this important topic.

I did a small test, and the large orders appear to follow your position.
When I placed a sell order for a few thousand STEEM just below one of their large sell walls, the wall immediately moved down to stay ahead of my order, preventing it from being the best offer.
The same thing happened on the buy side. When I placed a buy order just above their large buy wall, they moved their order up to stay in front.
Based on this, it seems they only allow smaller buy and sell orders to pass while keeping control of the top of the order book.
