Yellow Jackets In The Garden - OUCH!
Believe it or not, these painful creatures can be very beneficial if you allow them to do their work undisturbed. They are great at searching out, killing and eating harmful worms that would destroy your tomato plants and cabbage plants. Yes, if they decide to build their nest in an area that could pose a danger to children or pets, they need to be dealt with but if not, they can be a strong ally in defending your garden!

No yellow jackets around but plenty of daddy long legs. They seem to show up IN my house a lot in the spring. I told them the aphids were outside but they don't listen.
If you did have to kill a nest you could come back later and pour melted aluminum down the hole. There is a guy on Youtube that does that with ant hills and some of his creations have been displayed in museums. To my knowledge nobody has done the same with yellow jackets.

I know they're good guys overall but... there seems to be so many here on my property! I am on a constant look out for their nest because I've been stung for the first time and another person was stung three times! We've yet to find it though... they're constantly around me... it's like they're missiles aimed for just me! Buzzing me in the face ... I can hardly get anything done. Uggghhh

I have 20 acres and a blue spruce that I have learned that they love! THEY COUKD BE COMING FROM MILES AWAY!! It's sad. Haha

Yes sir, they sting if force when you disturb them, I agree they are here for a reason, but we keep a watch if there is a nest close to the house or garden. I normally use 90% rubbing alcohol to put a nest to sleep.
We just pour gasoline down the hole...not a lot because its an instant kill and the fumes will travel through the rest of the nest and kill them all.
Watched a video by One Yard Revolution today, he was talking about the need for them to go after the squash bugs.
Cool! I like his channel...he is so cramped in...he desperately needs a homestead.
Being in Chicago, he just needs to get out of there.
I use the dawn treatment. 1/4 or so dish detergent to a spray bottle. Bloby spray. What to hit them with a soaking spray. Get the wings wet and cover the body. One hit for a yellow jacket. 2 3 for a black hornet. Don't kill the segmented vatieties they are our friends.
