Riding Crypto Trends with Elder's Impulse System (Without Losing Your Shirt)

in #impulsesystem4 days ago

I don't know about you, but I've lost count of how many times I've stared at a chart at 2am, finger hovering over the buy button, thinking "is this it, or am I about to get rekt?" That's the whole problem with momentum trading. Jump in too soon and you're the guy who bought a fakeout. Wait too long and, well, congrats, you just bought the top.

A while back I started using something called the Impulse System, cooked up by Dr. Alexander Elder, and honestly it's become one of those tools I can't unsee once I know it.

The easiest way to describe it: it's a traffic light for your charts. Green means go, red means stop, blue ish means "hang on a sec." Nothing groundbreaking sounding, but the logic behind it is genuinely clever, and it's saved me from a fair number of dumb trades.

So what's actually going on under the hood?

Most indicators only tell you one thing, either "which way is the trend going" or "how strong is the push right now." Elder's trick was smashing two of them together and only flashing a signal when they agree.

The two ingredients:

  • A 13 period EMA, a short-term moving average that shows you the immediate direction. Rising EMA, trend's leaning up.
  • The MACD histogram, this is your momentum gauge. Bars getting taller than the last one? Momentum's building.

Put them together and your candles get painted one of three colors:

Green bars. The EMA's climbing and the histogram's climbing. Bulls are basically driving the bus.

Red bars. Both are falling. Bears have the wheel, and they're not slowing down.

Blue bars. The two are disagreeing. Maybe price is drifting up but momentum's fizzling out underneath it. This is your "market's confused, maybe you should be too" signal.

What you're actually allowed to do

Here's the part I like most: the system isn't really about picking entries. It's about telling you what not to do. And weirdly, that's more useful.

Green means go long, don't short. Doesn't matter how "overbought" the chart looks to your gut, while it's green, shorting is off the table.

Red means stay short or stay in cash, don't buy. This is the big one for me personally. I've caught way too many "falling knives" on red bars thinking I was being clever. I wasn't.

Blue means chill. Take some profit, tighten your stop, or just wait it out. It's the market's way of saying "I haven't decided yet."

Making this actually work in crypto

Crypto doesn't sleep, and it loves a good liquidation wick out of nowhere, so treating every single green or red bar as gospel will whipsaw you into madness. A couple things that've helped me:

Check the bigger timeframe first. If the daily chart is clearly bearish, I ignore green bars showing up on the 15 minute, they're just noise inside a bigger downtrend.

Don't jump on the fifth green candle in a row. By that point the move's probably already tired. The sweet spot tends to be that first or second green bar right after price breaks out of a blue, choppy phase.

The real point of all this

At the end of the day, this system isn't magic, it's not going to hand you perfect entries. What it is good at is stopping you from fighting the market when it clearly has momentum on its side. That alone has saved me from a lot of "why did I even buy that" moments.

Curious what everyone else is doing, anyone else running color coded stuff like this, or are you still reading candlesticks the old fashioned way? Drop a comment, I'd love to compare notes.
