Basics of modern quiet quitting or sabotage dressed as apathy
Ants have been running complex societies since the Late Cretaceous, tens of millions of years before a single primate crawled out to compete and in all that time evolving toward nothing resembling a parliament, a union or a bill of rights, because the ant's social contract was written once, in absolute monarchy and never revised, leaving every innovation since a variation on domination or the narrow art of surviving it.
Protomognathus americanus is the proof: a slaver species that raids Temnothorax nests, slaughters the adults who might fight back and hauls off the larvae as living cargo, letting the colony's brood odor do the ideological work no human regime ever manages - the captives wake up in bondage already loyal to it, workers who never knew another loyalty was possible.
And still, something in them resists. Not an uprising, no mandibles through the throats of their captors, nothing so clean as revolution, just the slow withdrawal of labor, a refusal to nurse the next generation of their own replacements, sabotage dressed as apathy. The colony starves itself down by half. The captives already enslaved gain nothing from it, but die in harness regardless. Only the free colonies benefit, spared future raids, left to run their own ancient hierarchy in peace.
Which makes the whole spectacle look less like ant behavior and more like a documentary about any given office in 2026, where quiet quitting has become the closest thing white-collar labor has to insurgency, where the passive Kündigung (showing up, drawing a salary, doing precisely enough to avoid a paper trail and not one email more) functions as the human equivalent of a Temnothorax refusing to feed the queen's brood. Nobody storms the executive floor and nobody needs to, because the withdrawal is silent, plausibly deniable and devastatingly effective at the aggregate level even as it does nothing for the individual enacting it, since the disengaged worker doesn't get their stolen years back any more than the enslaved ant gets to unlearn the captor colony's scent.
And the analogy holds at the level that actually matters, which is who benefits. The employee running out the clock on a job they've mentally exited gains almost nothing personally - burnout without the campaign that should have caused it, resentment without release. What gains is the labor market itself, the next hire who walks into a slightly more cautious management culture, the colleague at a healthier company spared the same extraction because enough silent attrition elsewhere made the practice visibly costly.
Fifty million years of evolutionary R&D and several thousand years of organized labor have converged, apparently, on the same discovery: resistance that stops short of confrontation still works, it just never works for the ones doing the resisting.
