The Flying King: Willem-Alexander in the Cockpit ✈️👑
Did you know that the Dutch king, Willem-Alexander, is also a trained pilot? Not just for show — he has held a commercial pilot’s license and spent over two decades flying real passenger planes.
For around 21 years, he worked as a co-pilot for KLM, the national airline of the Netherlands. He mainly flew the Fokker 70, a regional jet used for shorter European routes. What makes this even more fascinating is that most passengers had no idea their flight was being operated by a king. He occasionally made announcements, but typically kept things low-key.
Willem-Alexander began flying in the late 1980s and maintained his qualifications alongside his royal duties. For him, flying wasn’t just a hobby — it was a way to stay grounded and connected to everyday life.
So yes, next time you board a plane, who knows… your pilot might just be royalty.
