Jesus & the Samaritan woman: I know that the Messiah will come, and when he comes, he will tell us everything. John 4:25
The encounter of Jesus with the Samaritan woman in Sychar, near Jacob's well, is one of the most emotional moments recounted by the Gospel of John. After the Wedding at Cana, the expulsion of the merchants from the temple, and Jesus' encounter with the doctor of the law Nicodemus, Jesus' dialogue with the Samaritan woman is a key moment where Jesus taught numerous mysteries of the Kingdom of God, an empire or dominion that is revealed progressively, incrementally to the disciples and followers of the divine master.
And Jesus, with the purpose to teach what this new spiritual government consists of, took up some concepts from the sapiential literature, such as when the Book of Proverbs identifies wisdom with that living water: "The words of the mouth are deep waters, but the fountain of wisdom is a rushing stream" Proverbs 18:4.
The Gospel of John recounts that Jesus arrived thirsty at Jacob's well, and asked for a drink to a woman who had come there to draw water. And in response to Jesus' request, the woman replied: "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" John 4:9. Thus began a dialogue about the true water of life, not the water from the well, but the spiritual water that Jesus came to bring to humanity. That living water, which is the wisdom that Jesus came to deliver for the spiritual change of humanity, a humanity oppressed by deception, ignorance, and the desire for evil.
And when the woman heard Jesus, she listened with skepticism, because the Samaritans were not truly Israelites but people whose ancestors had been brought by Sennacherib after the destruction of the Kingdom of Israel. The Samaritans knew the law and the promises of God, but they also had other customs due to their origins. And that is why, when Jesus spoke to her about the worship of the Father, a worship in spirit and truth, the woman answered him: "I know that the Messiah will come, and when he comes, he will tell us everything" John 4:25.
Despite her doubts, the woman understood that Jesus came with special knowledge, for Jesus revealed to her secrets of the heart that only she knew, and amazed, the woman spread the news of Jesus. The Gospel of John ultimately shows the encounter of Jesus with the Samaritan woman as a moment in which Jesus taught that his word, his wisdom, as a source of living water, is the way to that true knowledge of the Father, which is worship in spirit and truth.
