Bible knowledge: In time of civil war there are many leaders, but a sensible leader restores law and order. Proverbs 28:2
Just as the science of medicine attends to the health of the human body, the science of wisdom attends to the health of the social body; wisdom is then that net that prevents a society from falling into the worst of situations, widespread hatred among people. Wisdom teaches self-control, moderates selfishness, and the destructiveness of passions. And King Solomon, who ruled the nation of Israel with wisdom, knew about this problem and others related to the government of a nation, and that is why some proverbs reflect the wisdom that Solomon acquired as a ruler.
And with the purpose to teach that the greatest good a ruler should seek is the good of peace, Solomon gave a beautiful proverb to reflect upon: "In time of civil war there are many leaders, but a sensible leader restores law and order" Proverbs 28:2. It is clear that Solomon did not experience this proverb firsthand because the monarchy he personified did not have major problems, but it was surely something he learned from the experience of others. When selfishness prevails, conflicts and enmities soon arise because commodities like honor and wealth are scarce. And so, if self-control is lost, wars begin. It is logical, then, that a weakened tyranny leads to an oligarchy that may be at war or have some degree of conflict between its members. And this is what the proverb explains in its first part.
But then the second part of the proverb changes, and explains the importance of the monarchy, that is, the rule of the wise and sensible man. And here the proverb suggests that the sensible man, through the use of the common sense, in his search for the gift of peace, will establish order and law.
While tyrannies and oligarchies bring division, oppression, and wars, monarchy, the rule of the wise, brings blessing. This is the central idea of the proverb in the Bible. And there were many kings of Israel and Judah who set an example of this. The proverb with its knowledge hints at a final reflection to ponder, and that is the importance of a nation's leaders having the common sense and God's guidance necessary to achieve the peace and common good that are so essential for life. Because without that, a nation cannot have a future.
