A wonderful initiative to learn Havan and the Gayatri Mantra with children.
Merely relying on bookish knowledge is not enough to instill good values in children; it is also essential to connect them with their culture, traditions, and noble ideas. Performing a Havan (sacred fire ritual) with children and teaching them the Gayatri Mantra is a wonderful step in this direction. It can help foster discipline, concentration, good values, and positive thinking in them. First, select a clean and safe spot in the house for the Havan. Ensure there is a safe distance between the children and the fire, and always keep younger children under adult supervision. Prepare the Havan materials in advance and explain—in simple language—the significance of the ingredients and the Ahuti (offering) used in the ritual. Before starting, ask all the children to sit quietly. Begin by remembering God and offering a prayer. Then, recite the Gayatri Mantra slowly so the children can hear it, and ask them to chant it along with you. Initially, it is easier to teach the mantra by breaking it into smaller segments rather than trying to memorize the entire verse at once.
“ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः। तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं।
भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि। धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात्॥”
Explain the meaning of the mantra to the children in simple terms. Tell them that we are praying to God to inspire our intellect toward noble thoughts and the right path. When children chant the mantra with an understanding of its meaning, the practice becomes far more meaningful for them. During the Havan, children can be given small responsibilities—such as reciting the mantra, arranging the ritual materials, or making the offering (Ahuti) alongside the adults. Teach them not to rush while making the offering and to exercise caution near the fire. After the Havan, the children can sit quietly for a few minutes and chant the Gayatri Mantra. Finally, ask them what they learned that day. Encourage them to cultivate noble thoughts, speak the truth, respect elders, protect nature, and help others.
