Film Review: Looking for Eric (2009)

Ken Loach has built a career upon unflinching portrayals of working-class strife—films that confront audiences with the harsh realities of poverty, exploitation, and institutional failure. Comedy, therefore, represents something of a departure for the veteran British leftist, and Looking for Eric finds him tentatively venturing into feel-good territory, albeit with characteristically mixed results.

The film centres upon Eric Bishop (Steve Evets), a middle-aged postman in Manchester whose life has quietly unravelled. Estranged from his first wife Lily, saddled with raising two stepsons from his second marriage, and teetering on the edge of a nervous breakdown, Eric's existence is one of quiet desperation. Following a traffic accident that serves as a wake-up call to both himself and his colleagues, he undergoes a group meditation session that triggers a most peculiar coping mechanism: visions of his namesake and lifelong idol, former Manchester United striker Eric Cantona.

What follows is initially rather charming. Loach's trademark cinéma vérité approach—here making the everyday appear almost staged in its raw authenticity—proves surprisingly well-suited to magical realism. Evets, a musician rather than a trained thespian, delivers a performance that feels utterly unvarnished; he inhabits the role of the beleaguered everyman with a naturalism that invites immediate identification. His scenes opposite Cantona—who plays an idealised version of himself with evident relish—constitute the film's highlights. The Frenchman, all swaggering philosophy and cigarette smoke, serves as both conscience and confidence-booster, prodding Eric towards reconciliation with Lily and a more assertive approach to life's tribulations.

Yet Loach cannot resist his darker impulses. Approximately halfway through, the narrative takes a jarring turn into gangster melodrama, as Eric's stepson Ryan becomes entangled with a local criminal element. The tonal shift is disorienting; the gentle, whimsical comedy of the first hour gives way to something approaching the "ultra-depressive drama" that marks Loach's more typical output. The pacing falters, and the film risks collapsing under the weight of its own earnestness.

Salvation arrives in the form of a decidedly unconventional conclusion—a deus ex machina that resolves the criminal subplot through collective action rather than individual heroism. This ending, whilst narratively convenient, serves as a vehicle for Loach's enduring ideological preoccupations: the supremacy of worker solidarity over private property, and the transformative power of community organising. It rescues the film from its mid-section doldrums, though one cannot help but feel that Looking for Eric remains a work caught between the world as it is and the world as Loach believes it ought to be.

The film is ultimately a curious hybrid—neither the full-throated comedy its premise suggests nor the unrelenting social critique of Loach's finest work. It is, however, an honest and occasionally affecting portrait of masculine vulnerability, elevated by Evets' sympathetic turn and Cantona's magnetic presence. For audiences accustomed to more polished cinematic fare, Loach's unvarnished aesthetic may require adjustment, yet therein lies the film's integrity.
