Task 2: Family Story & Cultural Transmission (3 marks)
Who taught you this recipe? Was it your mother, father, grandparent, or another family member? Share the story behind this dish in your family. Is it tied to your childhood, special memories, or family traditions?
Why has this recipe been preserved over time? What makes it important to your family identity?
This dish became my family's signature the moment I cooked this dish one faithful day. First, my cousin sister taught me how to prepare this sumptuous dish while I was still living under her roof. We usually cook this dish whenever the husband return from work at weekends and so her frequent cooking of this dish got me glued to it and hence my attraction to the dish.
I was still 13 when I learnt this dish and when I finally returned home, I told my mom that I want to prepare a special dish for them. And in the house was my mom, my dad, brother, aunt, and cousins, so it was a full house.
When I began cooking, it looked new to them and they all kept asking me so many questions about this special dish I was cooking. I loved the part that we all had to share some stories as I cook, about my journey and the things that happened while I was away, it was fun. We all tasted for salt before I finally covered the pot for the final cooking.
The moment the food was ready, I dished for every one and guess what??? They all loved it. It was as though a new style of dish entered the family. My mom immediately called her friend who stays close to come and have a taste of this new dish her daughter prepared. After the meal, my mom declared the dish to be our family signature and we will prepare it basically on weekends.
This recipe stood out in my family, it brought togetherness, peace, unity, joy, celebration, a kind that only one dish has ever brought in a long time to my family. Each time this diah is prepared, you can feel the joy around, the peaceful communication among family, so it is one thing that has made this dish stand out and preserved over time.
This dish is important to my family identity because it represents tradition, connection and memories. Even though different family members may have their own style of preparing this dish, but in my family, it is where home is.
It represents simplicity, love and togetherness during difficult times. The laughter it brings cannot be compared to anything. It connects generations and reminds us of our cultural root
Task 3: Cultural Connection (3 marks)
What does this meal say about your family’s way of life?
Does it reflect values like unity, tradition, hospitality, or resilience?
How does this dish connect your present life to your past?
This meal shows that my family values love, unity, togetherness, culture and finding joy in simple moments. Each time we prepare this dish, everyone eats together, share stories, laugh loud, enjoy every bit of the moment. We don't forget to invite one or two friends to come enjoy this dish with us. It shows respect for culture and tradition by keeping family recipes alive.
This dish connect my present to my past because everytime I start the preparation of this dish, my childhood memories flash to my mind. It plays like yesterday. My family traditions and the loved shared around table comes to mind when I ate this special meal.
