The plant is easily recognized by its spectacular flowers, which come in two main forms: the plumosa group, which has feathery, upright spikes, and the cristata group, which resembles a wavy, velvety rooster's comb. The colors are very vibrant, ranging from fiery red and deep magenta to bright orange and golden yellow. Its leaves are generally straight to lance-shaped, sometimes with red or purple tints, further enhancing its ornamentation.
