Irrigation of fields is only to quench the thirst of crops.

The Tubewell and the Arrival of Birds

The moment the farmer switches on the tubewell and the 'hauz' (water tank) begins to fill, the gurgling sound of the water seems to serve as an invitation to the birds. Parched with thirst under the scorching sun, birds—distraught by the heat—are drawn irresistibly toward this artificial cascade.

A Confluence of Species: Flocks of sparrows and mynas are the first to arrive near the tubewell. Perching along the edge of the flowing stream, they first quench their thirst and then, fluttering their wings, take a refreshing bath.

The Presence of Predators: In search of insects and worms—stirred up from the soil alongside the water—egrets and Indian Rollers also come to settle upon the earthen ridges. They keep their keen eyes fixed upon the ripples of the flowing water.

A Vibrant Natural Tableau

The scene during the tubewell irrigation process is truly enchanting. As the water flows through small channels (known as barhas) to reach the fields, the birds follow right alongside these channels.

"It is a marvelous harmony of nature: where humans gather resources for their livelihood, the voiceless birds, too, find their sustenance and joy."

The birds do not merely drink the water; they also perch upon the trees surrounding the tubewell—such as the Peepal, Neem, or Sheesham—and begin to chirp. Their melodious chirping alleviates the farmer's fatigue, infusing the quiet fields with a musical resonance.

The arrival of birds in the fields is not merely a visual spectacle; it is also highly beneficial for agriculture. During irrigation, birds prey upon the harmful insects and pests that are flushed out from beneath the soil. This provides natural protection to the crops and significantly reduces the need for chemical pesticides.
