The Red-wattled Lapwing, commonly known as 'Tithari' or 'Titoni' in Hindi, is a very familiar and unique bird found in India. It is primarily seen in plains, fields, lakes, and riverbanks. Physical Appearance and Identification: The lapwing is a medium-sized bird, approximately 32 to 35 centimeters long. Its legs are yellow and quite long. Its most distinctive features are the red wattle before its eyes and its red beak, tipped with black. Its head, throat, and upper chest are bright black, while its back is brown and its belly is completely white. Male and female lapwings are identical in appearance. Behavior and Characteristics: The most interesting feature of the lapwing is that, despite being able to fly, it never perches on trees. It is a completely ground-dwelling bird. It is extremely alert and vigilant. Whenever a human or animal approaches its nest or eggs, it cries out loudly. Its call sounds like "Did he do it?" or "tit-tit-tit," alerting the entire area to danger. Therefore, it is also known as the "watchman" of the forest.
