Hello dear Steemians!

Important business news does not always concern the opening of a large factory or the arrival of an international company. It can also be found in a local shopping centre where workers, artisans, residents and tourists interact every day.

For the second week of Steemit Challenge Season 33, I visited La Sirène Shopping Center, located in Djerba Midoun, Tunisia. I went there on July 22, 2026 to discover its commercial activity, observe the working environment and examine its contribution to the local community.

La Sirène Shopping Center offers Tunisian handicrafts, pottery, traditional clothes, cosmetics, bags, jewellery, souvenirs, sportswear and many other products. This diversity makes it an interesting place for both residents and tourists.

My journey to La Sirène Shopping Center

I left my home in the morning and travelled to the shopping centre by taxi. The establishment is approximately 11 kilometres from my home, and the journey took about 20 minutes.

I arrived at approximately 10:30 AM. The weather was clear, and the commercial area was already active. The building was easy to recognise because the name “Shopping Center La Sirène” was displayed prominently on the façade.

La Sirène Shopping Center is open every day from 9:00 AM until midnight. These extended opening hours are very convenient during the summer season. Tourists often visit beaches or tourist attractions during the day and prefer to shop in the late afternoon or evening.

When I entered the centre, I discovered a spacious, bright and well-organised interior. The products were arranged in separate sections, which made it easy to move around and examine them.

The workers welcomed customers, answered questions, arranged products and monitored the different sections. Their work requires patience, good communication and a strong knowledge of the merchandise.

Working in this type of establishment provides valuable commercial experience and allows employees to meet customers from many countries. However, standing for extended periods, working late and dealing with seasonal variations in tourism can make the job demanding.

My overall first impression was positive because the place was clean, colourful and full of different products.

Has any business opened or closed in my region?

During my field visit, I could not verify the recent opening or closure of another specific business. I therefore decided not to present an unconfirmed story as business news.

The important business subject I selected is the continuing commercial activity of La Sirène Shopping Center and its contribution to the economy of Djerba Midoun.

The establishment operates like a small commercial ecosystem because it brings several business categories together in one place. Visitors can find handicrafts, fashion products, souvenirs, pottery, jewellery, sportswear, cosmetics and many other items without travelling to several separate shops.

This activity is important for the region because it generates work for salespeople, transporters, suppliers and craftspeople. It also gives Tunisian-inspired products greater visibility among international visitors.

In my opinion, a diversified shopping centre can strengthen a tourist destination. Visitors need places where they can find useful products and souvenirs in a comfortable environment. Local residents also benefit from having many commercial services in one location.

The fixed-price signs displayed on the façade can provide greater transparency for customers who prefer to know the cost of a product without negotiating.

What products are currently being sold in my region?

La Sirène Shopping Center contains an impressive selection of products for different needs and budgets.

  • Customers can discover traditional dresses, colourful summer clothes and other garments that reflect the diversity of fashion available in a major tourist area.

  • The handicraft sections contain pottery, wooden sculptures, decorative camels, musical instruments, Tunisian mugs and objects inspired by the country’s cultural identity.

  • Visitors looking for practical products can choose from woven baskets, handbags, backpacks, shoes, sportswear, cosmetics and personal-care products.

  • Tourists can purchase magnets, postcards, key rings, bells, figurines and other small souvenirs representing Tunisian doors, beaches, camels, fish and desert landscapes.

Here, the expression “on sale” means that the products are currently available for purchase. I did not see enough verified promotional labels to claim that they were being offered at discounted prices.

These products can benefit the community in several ways. Commercial activity creates income for workers and suppliers. Tunisian handicrafts also help preserve cultural knowledge and give artisans access to customers who might not visit a traditional workshop.

A small souvenir may appear simple, but its production and sale can involve an artisan, a supplier, a transporter and a salesperson. When a tourist takes that object home, it also becomes a small ambassador for Tunisia.

What products do I want to buy?

The first product that attracted me was a handwoven Tunisian basket. Its price was approximately 45 TND, which is equivalent to 378 STEEM when using the conversion rate of 1 TND = 8.4 STEEM.

The second product I wanted to buy was a decorative Tunisian ceramic vase. Its price was approximately 30 TND, or 252 STEEM according to the same conversion rate.

The two products would cost a total of 75 TND, equivalent to 630 STEEM.

I particularly liked the woven basket because it is beautiful, practical and reusable. It can be used for shopping, summer outings, beach trips or home decoration. Unlike a disposable plastic bag, a strong woven basket can remain useful for several years.

The ceramic vase also attracted my attention because its traditional colours and design represent an aspect of Tunisian craftsmanship. It would be a meaningful decorative object for my home and could also make an excellent gift.

Buying these products would allow me to obtain useful and culturally meaningful objects while supporting commercial activity in the region.

If the centre accepted STEEM payments, the calculation would be as follows.

The STEEM prices in this report are based on the specified conversion rate of 1 TND = 8.4 STEEM.

What kind of business does my region need?

In my opinion, Djerba needs a modern marketplace dedicated to certified Tunisian products and environmentally responsible handicrafts.

This marketplace could bring together artisans from Djerba and other Tunisian regions. Every product could carry a label explaining where it was made, who made it and which materials were used.

  • A reliable certification system would help customers distinguish authentic Tunisian handicrafts from products that were imported or produced industrially.

  • A QR code attached to each product could introduce the artisan, explain the manufacturing process and present the cultural meaning behind the design.

  • An online ordering and international delivery service could help artisans continue selling their products outside the tourist season.

  • Training programmes could teach young people how to combine traditional skills with modern design, digital marketing and responsible production methods.

Such a business would create opportunities for young entrepreneurs and protect traditional knowledge. It would also give tourists more confidence when they want to buy authentic products.

Djerba already has a strong cultural identity and an international reputation. A certified marketplace could transform that identity into sustainable economic opportunities for the community.

How have local businesses adopted cryptocurrencies?

Cryptocurrency adoption in local retail businesses remains limited.

During my visit, I did not see any visible sign indicating that La Sirène Shopping Center accepts STEEM, Bitcoin, USDT or another cryptocurrency.

However, Visa and Mastercard signs are displayed on the façade. This indicates that electronic bank-card payments are available or promoted. It also shows that the establishment is already familiar with payment methods other than cash.

I did not complete a cryptocurrency transaction, and I did not receive official confirmation from management that cryptocurrency is accepted. I therefore cannot claim that customers can currently pay with STEEM or another digital currency.

A shopping centre that welcomes international tourists could consider testing cryptocurrency payments.

  • A clearly displayed QR code could allow visitors to pay quickly with an approved digital currency while receiving transparent information about the conversion rate.

  • Employees would need practical training so that they could confirm transactions, explain the payment procedure and assist customers when necessary.

  • The business would need to maintain clear accounting records and comply with the financial regulations applicable in Tunisia.

Cryptocurrency payments could provide international visitors with an additional option and could introduce local businesses to the digital economy. However, price volatility, technical difficulties and legal uncertainty remain significant challenges.

For these reasons, adoption should be gradual, secure and transparent.

Environmental impact of the business

The environmental impact of a shopping centre can be both positive and negative.

One positive observation was the presence of woven baskets, pottery and durable decorative objects. Reusable products can remain useful for many years and can reduce the need for disposable alternatives.

Products manufactured locally or regionally may also support shorter economic supply chains. However, I could not verify the exact origin of every item during my visit.

I noticed plastic packaging around some clothes and commercial products. The building also requires lighting and air conditioning, especially during the hot summer season. Transporting merchandise and operating the centre every day also consume energy.

La Sirène Shopping Center could improve its environmental performance in several ways.

  • The establishment could replace unnecessary plastic packaging with recyclable paper or reusable materials whenever the nature of the product permits it.

  • Customers could be encouraged to use woven baskets and reusable shopping bags instead of receiving disposable plastic bags.

  • Separate waste containers could be installed for plastic, paper and general waste so that employees and visitors could participate in recycling.

  • Products genuinely made in Tunisia could receive greater visibility through clear labels that identify their origin and materials.

  • Energy-efficient lighting and solar panels could reduce electricity consumption and make better use of Djerba’s abundant sunshine.

  • Customers who refuse disposable packaging could receive a small discount or another reward for making a responsible choice.

Clear environmental information would allow customers to compare products and make more responsible decisions.

My video report and proof of presence

I recorded a video during my visit to provide a broader and more realistic view of the shopping centre.

The video presents the interior atmosphere and the different commercial sections, including handicrafts, pottery, clothes, cosmetics, bags, souvenirs and accessories.

I appear personally in the video, which provides proof of my presence at La Sirène Shopping Center on July 22, 2026.

The video complements my photographs because it allows viewers to understand the size of the establishment and observe how the products are displayed.

My final assessment

My visit to La Sirène Shopping Center showed me that a commercial establishment can also serve as a window into the identity of a region.

The centre’s main strengths are its variety, spacious interior, attractive presentation, fixed-price concept and long opening hours. It serves local residents who need practical products and tourists who want to take a memory of Tunisia home.

Personally, I enjoyed exploring the different sections because every aisle presented new colours, materials and cultural symbols. The visit also reminded me that responsible local commerce can create employment, support artisans and help preserve Tunisia’s cultural heritage.

I would give La Sirène Shopping Center a positive assessment. Greater transparency about product origins, stronger environmental measures and the future adoption of modern payment solutions could make the experience even better.

I invite @suboohi, @sualeha and @ruthjoe to participate in this challenge and tell us about important business news from their regions.

Best Regards,
@kouba01
