Pancha baja

Panche Baja (पञ्चे बाजा) is a traditional Nepali musical ensemble played during weddings, religious ceremonies, festivals, and other auspicious occasions. It is an important part of Nepal’s cultural heritage.

The classic Panche Baja consists of five main instruments:

• Narsingha – A long, curved brass horn.
• Karnal – A straight brass trumpet.
• Damaha – A large kettle drum.
• Tyamko – A smaller kettle drum.
• Jhyali – A pair of metal cymbals.

In some regions, additional instruments such as the Shehnai (Sanai) are also included, creating a larger ensemble often called Naumati Baja.

Panche Baja is especially popular among communities such as the Damai, who have preserved this musical tradition for generations. The lively and ceremonial music symbolizes celebration, prosperity, and joy, making it a cherished part of Nepali culture.
