This is what the sun can do to your camera.

These photo's are not mine, but because it shows how photographing the sun can damage your equipment (and your eyes!) I just had to post this.

In an entertaining blogpost Memphis based Lensrentals, a company dedicated in renting photo and video equipment (and also dedicated in repairing their own equipment) reports on camera gear that was destroyed during the recent solar eclipse of august.

I had a discussion with some guy who refuted the 'don't look in the sun' warnings in anticipation of the eclipse, claiming "I can see, can't I? So how is looking into the sun going to blind me?"

Well here is what the sun does to your lens when exposed for a prolonged time:

And this is what it does to your camera sensor and shutter mechanism - in fact the shutter wasn't able to protect the sensor from damage. The sun's spot is literally baked on the sensor:
