Hezekiah & the protection of God: The LORD sent an angel, who annihilated all the fighting men and the commanders and officers in the camp of the Assyrian king. 2 Chronicles 32:21

The Second Book of Chronicles recounts that Hezekiah succeeded his father Ahaz on the throne of the kingdom of Judah. And according to the Bible, King Ahaz had done evil in the eyes of God. But Hezekiah was different because he was a God-fearing man. It could be safely said that of all the descendants of the Davidic dynasty, except Jesus of Nazareth, Hezekiah was the most like David as a military leader and ruler. As David defeated Goliath, Hezekiah defeated Sennacherib.
But before proving his worth as a military leader, Hezekiah carried out an important religious reform, returning the Kingdom of Judah to the times when David ruled, purifying the temple, holding a solemn celebration of Passover to please God, and taking measures against idolatry. Hezekiah, as ruler, did not divide or generate distrust, something typical of fools, but rather he unified his people under one God. King Hezekiah was decidedly a person endowed with great common sense, and he demonstrated this fact in all his actions as King.
And as all the prophets taught, God turned his face to King Hezekiah and gave him his spiritual guidance and protection. And so when a serious and unforeseen destructive event occurred, the invasion of the tyrant Sennacherib, ruler of the Assyrian empire, Hezekiah was well established on his throne and was able to resist with success. And this is precisely the good thing about wisdom and the fear of God; Hezekiah did not have to improvise last-minute measures, because the most important thing had already been done. The Kingdom of Judah was not an easy prey for Sennacherib, as the Kingdom of Israel had been.
Hezekiah intelligently cut off the springs of water that ran near Jerusalem, fortified his capital, and manufactured weapons for the defense of the city. And when Sennacherib arrived, the siege of Jerusalem began, and Hezekiah and Isaiah together prayed to God, and the Lord, in His wisdom, granted His protection to those who help themselves with these words: "The LORD sent an angel, who annihilated all the fighting men and the commanders and officers in the camp of the Assyrian king" 2 Chronicles 32:21. Victory finally went to Hezekiah and Sennacherib had to return to Assyria defeated.
Hezekiah's life was a demonstration of Psalm 1, the Psalm of the Two Ways: God helps the upright in heart but punishes the wicked. God's protection and guidance are not free; they are earned through the only path that pleases Him: righteousness.
