Another rain run and pushed a bit too hard on this one

in #running5 days ago

My casual run in the rain the other day was so wonderful that I decided to go at it again when it was forecast to rain the very next day at around the same time. The situation was similar in that most people were not out there because they don't want to get wet (losers) and I had the park trails mostly to myself.

This time I did it a bit different though in that I was trying to maintain an under 7 mins per kilometer which because I am so big at nearly 200 lbs of ex-bodybuilder, this is about as fast as I can go in a 5-10 k.

It's not always a good idea though and I ended up paying the price for my speed that night as well as the next day which ended up being a rest day out of necessity.

I really should stop trying to do this because the same result happens almost every time. I end up over-exerting myself and then hurt later on. This time I tried to circumvent the inevitable muscle-ache by doing a bunch of stretching in front of the tv but I guess I didn't do enough.

The run was still more enjoyable than my usual runs where I spend most of my time trying to dodge people instead of focusing on exercise. There were also some people on the running trails that were walking with umbrellas, which is posted as being prohibited and at one point I shouted at a couple that was blocking the entire trail "no umbrellas on the running path!"

I hate to be a Karen but seriously, this is a very simple rule that is posted everywhere. Some people just think the entire world was built for them.

I think I ended up trying to push it so much because my first km was under 7 minutes naturally without me pushing it actively. It just kind of happened and so I decided to just keep this pace up, and honestly, since I paid for it later that day and also a day after, I think this is a bad idea for me while endurance training.

My heart rate was good but not ideal as I would like to see most of my activity be in the Aerobic portion or "zone 3". I am kind of unable to monitor these things when running because I changed the battery settings on my watch. I will need to start to plan and get a full charge before I head out so that the face of the watch will stay on when I turn it towards my face. On battery saver mode the face will not turn on at all unless you touch the watch and since I am running with a water bottle in the rain as well, this isn't always so easy to do.

Turning the timer off when I am wet and so is the watch is also a pain because the face needs to be dry and so does your finger on the opposite hand. This is not so easy to accomplish when your entire body is wet and so is the watch.

I got it done though, and I learned something. If I want to be able to do these things easily, I need to learn to "stay in my lane" and not push towards under 7 mins per kilometer unless I have a rest day planned for the next day.

I probably could have gone out there and walked the next day, but the demotivating pain of muscle ache was too much and I took a day off. Maybe that will end up helping me on the run I have planned for this afternoon should it rain again.
