This post is worth reading. The topic of "solid water" is important in addressing the climate crisis, but the environmental benefit depends on the difference between various technologies used by manufacturers.
Most importantly, projects like the European RAINS project achieve the absolute elimination of microplastics. While commercial innovators like Solid Rain® are ahead of the game with potassium polyacrylate, the continuously high accumulation of synthetic polymers in industrial agriculture makes the scientific community sceptical. A hydrogel that consists of over 95% water and that is made with a biodegradable matrix is a revolutionary solution for soil quality.
Nonetheless, according to the post, there are still some substantial barriers to commercializing this idea:
- The financial issue. The price of USD 1,500 per hectare makes the idea financially unviable for regular farmers.
- The reverse sponge impact. The scientific warning that dry gels can absorb moisture from plant roots poses a serious problem that should be addressed through experiments in practice.
Do you believe that subsidies provided by the government as well as EU grants can reduce the price of eco-friendly technologies, thus making them accessible for general producers?
In general, I’m not a big fan of the state getting involved in our lives. I prefer private enterprise; it’s cheaper.
