Seek wisdom & mercy: Do not add to the problems of those who are desperate, or keep them waiting for your charity. Ben Sira 4:3
According to the spiritual teachings of the master Ben Sira in his sapiential book, wisdom and the spiritual gifts that accompany it must have a practical purpose for daily life to help common and simple people, and not remain merely in empty teachings. Wisdom is not a form of coaching or simple self-help system; wisdom is a science that should guide men toward the development of their own nature, the likeness to God in essence. Wisdom is expansive, progressive, and benevolent; and like a beautiful sunrise that leads men towards midday, wisdom is the only path to Gnosis (inner enlightenment). Because truth exists, and whoever does not understand this whole matter is because he has an erroneous knowledge of what spirituality is.
This is why wisdom, like a light placed in the highest place of a house or a city, stands in opposition to ignorance and the oppression and despair of ordinary people, in a world where apparent goods like money deceive humanity. The wise person, the person endowed with wisdom in his heart, redeems, guides, instructs, and inspires those who cannot clearly perceive with their minds the truth. A society led by a wise person cannot fall into ruin but must move towards prosperity, like when, according to the Bible, the wise Solomon ruled the Kingdom of Israel.
Thus, the master Ben Sira with the purpose of educate and confront this problems left a series of some teachings of wisdom on how sensible men should deal with those in need, such as not facilitating oppression or deception, and practicing mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness) freely and without selfish interests, with these words: "Do not add to the problems of those who are desperate, or keep them waiting for your charity" Ben Sira 4:3. And the wise man also added: "Do not neglect a suppliant in distress, or turn your face away from the poor" Ben Sira 4:4. The sensible man must seek knowledge and oppose error in all its forms expanding the good to his neighbor; this is the message of Ben Sira with his spiritual teachings. Ultimately, the world is a great spiritual battleground where knowledge and ignorance, good and evil, error and success are constantly at play. And wisdom, in the vast majority of cases, can make all the difference.
