Where I Go to Escape the Crowds in Ljubljana

in #slovenia8 days ago

I love Ljubljana, but let's be honest: during the summer months, the old town can get surprisingly busy. The riverside cafés are packed, the bridges are full of people taking photos, and sometimes it feels like you're walking in a slow-moving parade rather than exploring a city.

The funny thing is that you only need to walk for ten or fifteen minutes before it feels like you've got Ljubljana almost to yourself.

Whenever I visit, I always set aside an hour or two just to leave the tourist hotspots behind. It completely changes the experience.

Walk Along the Ljubljanica – But Go the Other Way

Most visitors stay around the Triple Bridge and the Central Market, but I often simply follow the river away from the center. The crowds gradually disappear, and suddenly you find yourself passing small parks, local apartment buildings, and people walking their dogs instead of carrying selfie sticks.

I actually enjoy these walks more than the famous landmarks. They give me a better feeling for what everyday life in Ljubljana is like.

Tivoli Park Never Disappoints

If I've had enough of the crowds, Tivoli Park is usually my first choice.

The park is huge, and once you get a little deeper inside, you can sit on a bench and hear nothing but birds and the occasional cyclist passing by. Sometimes I'll grab a coffee beforehand and simply wander without any destination.

Not every trip has to be about ticking attractions off a list.

Climb Up to Rožnik Hill

One of my favorite little escapes is Rožnik. It isn't some dramatic mountain hike—you don't need special equipment or a full day—but after twenty or thirty minutes of walking, you feel surprisingly far away from the city center.

The little church at the top and the surrounding forest make it one of those places where you forget you're actually in a capital city.

Visit the City Early

This might sound obvious, but I learned it the hard way.

If you head into the old town before nine in the morning, Ljubljana feels completely different. The cafés are just opening, locals are heading to work, and the streets belong to the city rather than the tour groups.

I actually prefer the city at 8:00 AM with a coffee in my hand over the middle of the afternoon.

Don't Be Afraid to Leave the "Must-See" Route

Some of my favorite moments in Ljubljana happened because I turned into a random side street instead of following Google Maps.

A quiet little square, an old bakery, a hidden garden, or a tiny local bar often ends up being more memorable than another famous viewpoint.

If you're looking for even more ideas, I can definitely recommend reading this guide about where locals go when they want to get away from the busiest parts of the city:

After all, Ljubljana isn't a city that needs to be rushed. Slow down, leave the busiest streets behind for a while, and you'll probably discover the version of the city that you'll remember long after your trip is over.
