John the Baptist about Jesus: Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me. John 1:15

The Gospel of John begins in a very particular way. While the Gospel of Mark begins with the preaching of John the Baptist and the Gospel of Matthew begins with the genealogy of Jesus, the Gospel of John presents Jesus as the personification of the word, an eternal and uncreated word. A word, that is, a wisdom of the Lord that created all things: "And with this Word, God created all things. Nothing was made without the Word" John 1:3.
And this has a spiritual meaning because the Kingdom of God announced by Jesus, according to the Gospel of John, is the man who becomes "son of God" and God who becomes "son of man". In other words, it is the man who seeks the word of God, and on the other hand, it is the word personified in Jesus. The Gospel of John continues its teaching and affirms that the Word became flesh, that is, became man: "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us" John 1:14.
And then the gospel takes a turn by introducing the testimony of John the Baptist about Jesus. And the Gospel of John affirms that John the Baptist came into the world as a witness to that word, that light, that wisdom of God that illuminates the minds of men. And the Gospel of John describes the testimony of John the Baptist with these words: "Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me" John 1:15.
With this, John the Baptist affirmed that Jesus is uncreated, eternal, and coexistent with God. John the Baptist also taught the spiritual mission of Jesus. John the Baptist had come to baptize with water, a baptism of repentance, but Jesus came to baptize in salt and fire, to give the spiritual gift of eternal life, the true spiritual life, to all who believe in him. The words of John the Baptist transcend the human and the earthly and delve into the eternal and the divine. This long discourse on the nature of the word, the light, and the testimony of John the Baptist about Jesus will be repeated throughout the Gospel of John, but with other words, every time Jesus performed a miracle, he affirmed an "I am." To understand the gospel of John is to know Jesus in a unique and different way.
