Jesus is the Son of Man: But I have a greater witness than John—my teachings and my miracles. John 5:36
In the Gospel of John, Jesus presented himself as the Son of Man, a title that comes from the Old Testament. The Book of Ezekiel, for example, explains that this was the title God gave to the prophet so that he could fulfill his mission of prophesying. But in Jesus, for his mission in the world, this title takes on a different and special connotation.
Jesus had to present himself to his listeners and disciples in a way that wouldn't cause a major scandal and lead to accusations of being a false prophet; publicly claiming the title of Messiah could have condemned him to death. John the Baptist had suffered martyrdom for far less.
This is why Jesus subtly presented himself as the personification of God's perfections, that is, as God who becomes the Son of Man. This is why, after the multiplication of the loaves, he presented himself as the bread of life, that is, as the personification of wisdom, that wisdom that nourishes the souls of men, for example. Or like when Jesus healed a man born blind near the pool of Siloam and explained that he is the light of the world (John 9:5).
And this affirmation of Jesus as the Son of Man makes his mission in the world superior to that of John the Baptist. This is why Jesus, when referring to himself in the Gospel of John, affirmed: "But I have a greater witness than John—my teachings and my miracles. The Father gave me these works to accomplish, and they prove that he sent me" John 5:36.
John the Baptist came into the world to announce the imminent arrival of the Kingdom of God and to baptize with water, that is, to give a baptism of repentance. But Jesus came into the world to baptize with salt and fire, that is, to announce to humankind the arrival of the spiritual gift of eternal life, the spiritual life that once obtained cannot be lost, with the power of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Wisdom. This was what made Jesus so special and what he had to fight for until his crucifixion: to announce a new promise from God to men through a new covenant, his sacrifice. And it is for all these reasons that Jesus was the one sent by the Father, as he himself explained after healing a sick man at the pool of Bethesda, according to the Gospel of John.
